Neck Turning Question

I order ALL my reamers with a neck diameter that FORCES me to turn my necks to 12 thousandths. EXAMPLE: My "straight" .284 reamer has a .313 neck and a .235 Freebore. Lapua 6.5 x .284 brass has between 14-15 thousandths neck wall thickness from the factory. If left alone, I simply could not chamber a loaded round. However, once I turn my necks to 12 thousandths, I end up with 4 thousandths neck wall / chamber wall clearance. Now that the neck walls are 12 thousandths AND I anneal, my bullet seating is absolutely butter smooth every time.
Now for "SAFE" minimums, that is a personal preference. Some of your BEST Benchrest shooters turn their necks down to 9 thousandths! This entails making sure you have the proper reamer for that "thinness", if you will. Additionally, neck tension(s) for the absolute best accuracy will be not only very critical for accuracy, it may actually entail a HEAVIER tension to properly hold that bullet straight and in place. Much of this "what's the best" argument is really based on the shooting discipline you are engaging in>>>not necessarily what is "BEST" for your use!
This all great stuff,tks

Okay. I think I am beginning to understand all this. I recently bought an RCBS hand turning tool for turning the necks. From reading all the replies in the thread, it appears to me that I now need to have something to expand the necks of the cases so that the arbor of the neck turning tool can properly fit. Should I purchase the RCBS neck expanding die in .224?

Have you
CASE PREPARATION
Cases must be sized, trimmed for Over-All Length(OAL) and the case mouths
chamfered and deburred for use with the HCNT. Remove case lubricant from
cases. The Case Holder will not be as effective if cases still have case lubricant
on them.
The expander used with a standard full length sizing die, should open the neck to the correct diameter? If i read the instructions correctly?

This is the RCBS Hand turner?

If the sized , trimmed FL sized case doesnt fit on the pilot , as it should, then thats a problem.
Then may be an additional expander is needed?

I don't have an RCBS.

My Niel Jones bushings size all the way back to the shoulder. No bulge whatsoever.

And if your bullet base is in the correct spot in the neck (correct freebore) then who cares if it doesnt? The most accurate rifles in the world all use cases formed with FL bushing dies.

And none of the records in group or score matches happened with cases resized with any other sizing die type?

Does this work across all bullets diameters for a given caliber?

i too have a custom neil jones sizing die. i is made much different than a typical sizing bushing. the shoulder of the case is part of the bushing.

Theres always an exception of course but i know what the top competitors use and how they use it. Neck tension is adjusted all day long and theres no collet dies in sight.

What's your standard for someone to be a top competitor?

I know one who shot what's the smallest series of 10-shot groups at 600 yards ever fired and he didn't use bushing dies. All groups under 1.5 inch. Then shot 40 bullets into 1.93 inch. Used a pre-'64 Winchester 70 action based rifle.

None use one piece gelded full length sizing dies with neck diameter right for their objectives?

When making those neck tensioning tweaks; is it all done with bushing ID changes, or by sizing less, or more, of the neck’s length, or a mix of changes to both bushing ID and to length of the sized portion of the neck?
