Neck Turning Question?

Guys,

If you are going to remove .006 brass from the neck of the cartridge, is there any advantage to doing it in two passes, say you removed .003 at a time. Or would you just remove the whole .006 in one pass, that is what I usually do.

What do most of you use an electric screwdriver or do you use a electric drill or do the whole operation by hand?

Chuck:

You will find brass to be a sticky, ductile metal. Sharp tooling is very important. Brass is very abrasive and will quickly dull HHS and carbide. You will find .006 is easily removed with one pass. You may have to adjust your feed rate. If you are going to take this much metal off in one pass make sure you have a supporting mandrel or pilot.

Chuck,

One pass should do it although if you have two turners set up it's just one more step.
I use the cheap Black and Decker rechargeable screwdrivers that are less than $15 at Wal Mart. I have two so I'm turning while ones charging. They won't hold a charge for any length of time so a days notice to start charging them is required. Heck of a lot cheaper than buying a $300 case lathe, but since I'm only going to turn 100 cases at a time the added expense I just can't justify.

I also turn my case necks in one pass. The key to good uniform turning is a good fitting mandrel, and good lube so you don't over heat or gauld the mandrel.I turn the necks on my 6.5/284 and 6ppc brass. I made my own case prep station by using a motor off a meat grinder that was no longer needed for that purpose. Sinclair sells their case prep center for $395.00, mine cost a bunch less than that, not counting the original cost of the meat grinder., 5 or 6 years old ) It works great for turning case necks, the rpm is just right.
