Neck turning problem help

I am new to neck turning and it is not going so good. I have a 21st century turner. After I turn the neck I have found that the inside neck diameter is looser and my bullet will push into the case but it is not like that before I turn?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Brandon

Brandon,

I expect you're fixin to get several requests for a lot more information, particular to what you are doing. So for starters, are you using an expander mandrel prior to turning, that is properly paired to your turning mandrel? Are you using a lubricant on the mandrels?

Agree with VH. After you get the right neck wall thickness you want you can then go back and resize your necks to whatever you want for the neck tension on your bullet. These are 2 different steps.

Yes I do have the expanding mandral and the turning mandral and they are what came with the kit. When I run the case through the expander mandral/die the bullet will then slide into the case or if I just skip that and go to the turner after turning the exact same thing happens. This is a 6.5x47 lapua case necked down for 20 caliber. The cases have a .235 neck and I'm am turning for a clean up .0005 and to clean up some brass build up at the neck shoulder junction that resulted from the necking down process.

how loose is the fit of the ID of the expanded neck (or the newly necked-down case) when you slide it onto the turning mandrel?

what is the OD of your turning mandrel?

please explain what you are doing and what you are using to neck-down these '47 cases?

Are you sure you got the correct sized mandrels? Mine always get tight when turned. Matt

I just had a problem sizing up .243 Win brass to .264 and discovered that after expanding it up and turning the necks which seemed to be extremely tight on the turning arbor, that I also had a donut at the neck/shoulder junction inside the cases. Upon measuring the expander mandrel, I discovered it measured .263 ??%$#&

I called John (Great Guy) at 21st Century and he offered to immediately send me a new larger diameter expander mandrel. 21st Century is great to deal with.

Run it through a FL die with out the expander button (don't use a bushing on this step), expand with a mandrel .001" over your turning mandrel, turn your neck. Make sure you lube when turning it helps with the chatter and prevents galling. Run it through your sizer and load it like normal after you finish the case prep.

Is that largish radius about the neck/shoulder junction “some brass build up” or is it what was 6.5 neck and is now that area left untouched via the use of bushings to squish it down .060” into a .20 caliber neck?

The large radius is brass buildup. Am I ok to let the neck turner clean up that excess brass at the neck shoulder junction, I have a 30 degree cutter that matches my shoulder angle. The ones I hvae experimented with did turn out nice.
Thanks

What is the diameter of the neck in your chamber?

What is the neck diameter you want your loaded round to measure.

Have you stress relieved necks and shoulders?

Use a smaller size bushing on your neck sizer. Maybe 001" or 002" smaller is enough. Depends on how much did you take away from the necks. In a factory gun i usually end up with a wall thickness of 0.014"

Use a bushing that takes up the amount of material that you took away
