Neck turning....Newbie help needed

I just got my rebarreled rem 700 back from Hart barrels..3 months early, thank you very much..It is now a 6MMBR with a .270 neck..The lapua brass is right there..270 & a no go situation...Mr. harts instuctions say I must neck turn my cases to .268 ..I ordered a forster neck turning tool & the correct mandrel..I've got my cases sized & trimmed ..Anyone want to give some pointers ??? Seems simple, I just hate to think I'm ruining those pretty little stubby cases..TIA, mike in ct.

Mike,

I am at the same point you are. I have all the stuff to do the job, but I am not sure how. A detailed step by step instruction is what I need.

First have the right sized expander to expand the necks. .100 over the turning mandrel size is recommended. If your turning mandrel measures .2420 then your expander should be .2430 or there abouts. DON'T expand all your cases at once, because of brass springback. Expand one, then lube the inside of the neck with whatever you're using,I prefer Imperial die wax) put the case in your power screwdriver and easy on, easy off is the way to go.

I'm assuming you have your neck turner set to cut the correct depth and just into the shoulder. If you don't this is the tedious trial and error part. That's why most guys have multiple neck turners one for the first cut, another for the final cut.
What you need to do after turning one, resize the neck seat the bullet you plan to use, and measure the dummy round to see how much clearance you have. For example in a .269 neck a .267 loaded round is about right. Don't get anal, if you're close that's ok too.

Check your measurements often. Don't forget to measure all your rounds after you load them up to make sure things didn't move on you. After that you're home free.

Ditto what Danny said. Also, work at a slow pace, especially if you are using power to turn the cases on the mandrel.

I once got myself going on a really efficient run of cases, churning them out one after the other that when I stopped and checked my neck thickness, I found that I was now producing necks which were .0115 instead of .0120. When I felt the mandrel, it was getting pretty warm. I guess that the heat buildup and expansion can be enough to reduce the clearance between the cutter and the mandrel. When I left everything to cool down again, thicknesses were back up to .0120.

Maybe not such a big deal but if you are going to the trouble to do it, you may as well go slow and do it as well as you possibly can.

Project went well, neck turning just takes time..thank you all...Dummy round I made up is difficult to send into the chamber..turned brass with no bullet is fine ....the bullet seems to be touching the lands...I tired seating it deeper..seems to help...more later, mike in ct

I have just received my new 30BR and sat down and tried all my neck turned brass in the chamber 4 didn't go as i had not turned quite far enough into the shoulder still a little of the donut but was soon rectified and then tried with projectile and overall length looks to be 2.290 on the lands and neck has .002 clearance. So now i am ready to start loads.
