neck turning

Hi Guys! I'm about to get into neck turning. Have a tight necked 6MM so will be turning entire neck into shoulder rather than a skim cut. Ques: (1) What is acceptable variance in neck wall thickness ? (2) Will a carbide turning Mandrel yield a more uniform case wall? (3) What type expander mandrel offers best chance of keeping necks centered to case body?........ I'm a little on the anal side so if you're going to answer please explain WHY your suggestion may be better than another ;) No mud slinging or fur flying please 8) Thanks, Dale

I got the PMA set up. 1-.0001, 2- maybe, but I use the SS mandrel. 3- the mandrel die does not form/hold the outside of the case. Just pushes into the neck. Get a good set up and go by the instructions. Easy peasy. I was "strung out" about it, at first. After a few cases, no problem.

1/ With the proper set-up and technique you should be able to hold 0.0002" or less variance.
2/ Carbide without a doubt will provide the most uniform results due to less friction - the ability to maintain the brass and tooling at a constant temperature will assure uniformity in resultant neck wall thickness.
3/ The best expander mandrel is the one made by the same manufacturer of the neck turner.....buy as a set.

Thanks for the input Guys ! I kinda liked the 21st Century case holder with the O-ring. Anyone use this? Is there a quantifiable advantage to it? I can't justify the cost of the 21st Century lathe for the small amount of neck turning I'll be doing but their case holder seems like a no brainer. Just wondering how others feel about it? I'd be using it with a variable speed drill motor of course.

I am partial to the PMA tool also. I bought the adapter to use K&M turning mandrels since I already had the K&M expanding mandrels. But I agree that you should use the same brand expanding mandrels and you use turning mandrels so the brass slides on and off smoothly.

here is a PMA in action turning 30br brass.... 6mm is even smoother on my setup (Dewalt cordless drill set on lowest speed, PMA case holder in chuck).

First, I agree with those who said that you can expect a run-out of .0001-.0002 inches if using high quality tools.

I use K&M Percision Shooting Shooting Products, and believe them to be of the highest quality. If you go the K&M route, make sure you purchase the "Ergo Holder." It makes for a much more pleasant operation. The guys at K&M can talk you through equipment selection. They're very easy to work with. Listen to them. They know what they're talking about.
