Neck turning issues

I think all the issue was lack of lube on the expanding mandrel ,thanks for the input guys
My shell holder is on the way from Sinclair.. Man I couldn't imagine turning a bunch of necks by hand..it would take forever..lol

Yes power makes it a lot better and quicker. Run them on and off real slow and don't run the drill super fast. 100 RPM is close. Keep the turner cool. Matt

Much better. I you want to really see what is going on at the neck shoulder junction, section the case.

The neck part looks good but it is hard to tell by the picture where the turning is on the shoulder. I enlarged it and still can't tell. It looks like you might be cutting into the shoulder some, but not sure. Like Dusty says if the pressure ring of the bullet is above there, it won't hurt you. Matt

I have a 223 Improved 40° shoulder with tight neck and never had an issue with neck turning..you would never think that with all these questions.. I'm kind of embarrassed..lol but with the money I'm spending on brass and bullets I want it all working right..
I want to shoot the Berger 105 gr VLD bullets..I haven't purchased any yet because it appears there all sold out right now..so I purchased some Sierra match king 95gr. And some 107 gr. Hopefully they will shoot out of my 8 twist barrel..
I can't remember if I mentioned it's a 6mm. BR .. There in the mail from Midway..I know there not as long a bullet compaired to bergers and I have no idea how deep they will seat inside the case neck.

The new Sierra 107 that come pointed from the factory are shooting pretty good. I know a couple of guys shooting them in Dashers and they have shot some good targets. You will just have to wait till they come and find out where they seat to. Matt

The VLDs are long so, I always cut a little on the shoulder, just to say you went far enough. This way you did all you could to offset future donut problems. (Yes some case will be crooked, and cut goofy when you touch the shoulder) Excess thickness on the bottom of the neck would only show up as a donut faster. Less worries if you have a long chamber throat.

I was thinking I should cut down onto the shoulder a little more and remove the ridge. It should iron out good after fire forming. The problem is Im worried about weakening the neck / shoulder juncture making the brass to thin..
Unless I'm told otherwise I'm going to leave as is

As long as your cut into the shoulder a small amount it is good. If you cut it too far you risk sending a neck down the barrel and ruining the barrel. Matt

Well I got all my case necks turned, cleaned them up with steelwool, annealed them. Then sized them with a .261" neck bushing, primed all 100 cases. And loaded 10 rds with bullets seated long..my thinking was when I get my new rifle I'll figure out what OAL I want to use and seat my. Bullets to that length.

I for got to measure a loaded round thinking mathematicly I should be good..well i n not sure..my rifle is going to have a .265" chamber and a loaded round is measuring .264" will this be to tight..do I need to pull bullets and turn down more.
Thanks guys

It may work as a Fitted Neck and shoot well, Not something I would advise a new neck turner to do though. I would go for .002" clearance. Turning will go fast since you have most of it done already. We have all made the same mistake turning.Remember.... Mistakes make you smarter.

  • Tomorrow I will be be testing my standard 6 Dasher load with the neck to chamber clearance being the only variance. The neck to chamber clearance will range from .001 to .0045 in .0005 increments. Do you think it will be measurable at 100 yd.?

..well I started the process of going back through and turning down my necks so I have more clearance..I have the .265 chamber, and a loaded round now measures .263".. , than I'm resizing with a .261" neck bushing....this sucks..I had everything so pretty ..lol....
I'm loading with CCI BR4 primers, 29.5gr. H-varget, and a 107 gr. Sierra match bullet..I'm leaving bullets seated pretty long, and will settle on final OAL once I get my rifle.
