Neck turning help - 7 SAUM

First I’m going to say that I’m fairly new to loading and am still learning. I’m measuring fired case necks (ADG) and am getting .3178”, sized and loaded cases I’m getting .3164” average. Assuming there is .001” of spring back on the fired cases (annealed) which would give me a chamber with a .3188-.319 neck and .0024-.0026” clearance. I’m thinking I may need to turn my necks down .0015”? I have never turned necks so I have a few questions. 1) is there any negatives to turning necks other than having to buy more tools and time to do it (just once). 2) will I have to do load development all over again? 3)any recommendations on a good, easy to use neck turning tool that won’t cost a whole lot? I do have a Sinclair die and turning mandrel as I was taught to use that for sizing necks vs. using the expander on a FL sizing die. 4) can I still size with an expander mandrel or expander ball on my FL sizer or do I need to get a bushing die? So with trying to possibly (not necessary though) keep everything the same Sinclair’s deluxe neck turning tool looks pretty decent and not too expensive. Open to other suggestions though.

Tool adjustment to get to the setting you want, heat of tool, heat of the case, speed at which cut is made, diameters of the mandrel and expander, correct lube. Cutting too deep into the shoulder, which could separate the neck from the case upon firing and turn the case neck into part of the bullet. (Don't ask!) You'll need a variable speed drill motor and case holder.

2) will I have to do load development all over again?
I would verify the load because you've change something.

3)any recommendations on a good, easy to use neck turning tool that won’t cost a whole lot?
I started with a Forester Hot 100 and went to PMA Tool. My deviation on neck thickness is: 0.0005" -0.001" with the PMA tool. Most cuts are right on but I have a few flyers.

4) can I still size with an expander mandrel or expander ball on my FL sizer or do I need to get a bushing die?
If your looking to control "neck to bullet" interference, you can full size without expander ball then mandrel up to the desired internal dimension, but this works the brass hard. A bushing die would be alot easier on the brass.

Practice on rejected brass first. Watch the heat, just holding a piece of brass in your hand will change the dimensions. Good luck!
