Neck turning for success.

Question Alex and others, do you cut out donuts inside the neck at the nk shoulder junction even if your not seating to them?
I do, my thinking is it interrupts the gas flow through the neck and causes turbulence. Right or wrong thinking? or not worth the hassle I havent tested it.
No, I dont worry about them. Some guys do though. I dont think of the gas inside the barrel flowing like a fluid. Not like air in a cylinder head for example. Its expanding in all directions so Im not sure if it responds to "fluid dynamics" like flowing gas or liquid does. I just tend to think in terms of volume rather than restrictions, radius, and angles like you would porting a head. But I could be way off base there. I think if fluid dynamics described what we are dealing with the Weatherby shoulder would create far less turbulence in the flow. Fun stuff to think about for sure.

Do folks that cool down their tool do it after every neck? If not how can results not change as tool heats up?

I run hot water over mine to start and go 4 it. Works for me.

I save the ice until finished, put into a glass, and fill with brown liquid.

Alex, in your experience, does the donut ever interfere with chambering a round fully? Will the donut come in contact with the chamber shoulder if not properly sized? How do you size this area of the case? Thanks

I had Pat send me everything I needed from PMA and maybe I’m doing something wrong but it really doesn’t heat up to any noticeable degree, and cuts really well.

No, I have never had a problem. If your seating bullets deep enough to touch the donut then I could see that happening. A full length non bushing die would size the whole neck if you were worried about it. Im not so sure we should not be doing that anyhow. That un sized part of the neck does not align like you read so often. All it can do is cause a bind. The base and the freebore diameter are the tightest points in the chamber, a third tight spot is not ideal imo.

I have a dedicated tin of Imperial I keep for my turning mandrel ( PMA ). In between pieces of brass, I dip the warm mandrel into the tin. With it being warm the Imperial quickly softens around the mandrel and leaves a super thin coating of lube for the next piece of brass. I keep some Q-Tips handy and run one into the neck while still spinning to remove any excess lube.

Regards
Rick

I thank those who started talking about my product. I would like to point out that it is not an aggressive chemical, does not cause skin problems and is not harmful if inhaled or ingested. Of course I recommend not leaving it within the reach of children. No OIL Lube Delta Carbon must be shaken before use and a drop on the neck and a drop on the Pilot is enough to ensure excellent processing on the lathe. It dries easily in a dry place, perhaps upside down in a rigid Lapua box that has a grill. For the Expander Die step, just wet the neck in a few drops in a used beer cap and pass as soon as you see the bubble at the end of the neck to the expander to have an excellent clean job without scratches or tears inside the brass. It should not be washed but left to dry. The dry life lubricating polymers will promote a smooth and consistent ammunition seal for all your ammunition. The SD is very low.. tests done with AMP press give very compact graphs.... Sorry for my English but it's not my native language but I hope I made myself understood.
Best Regards and Merry Christmas to all

Ps … the smell of No OIL Lube is….
camphor additive.. plasticizer and anti microbial. No OIL Lube Delta Carbon is not greasy but is based on water and high-tech polymers. A step ahead of the usual mineral and synthetic cutting oils in use.

5-8 hours drive??? That’s stopping you from competing??? I drive 4.5 hours each way to compete 7+ times per year.
Ok Dave, tell me where I can compete when I live in northwestern Kansas!! By the way, I'll take yah on shooting without optical magnification any day with my CG 63 w/ 29.5" long Norma barrel specifically made for 300 to 600 meter prone shoots!!! Plus, I've been shooting long range open sights for over 50 years!!! Starting with an 03A3 w/ air gauged barrel and military 30 cal LC match ammo shooting at 55 gal barrels over 1/2 mile away!!!! Went through 3 tins before I graduated from High school!!! I have played the long range shooting game for a long time!!!! Probably shot over 10K rounds at plus 600!!! Yeah, shooting in those days was a nickel or dime a shot!!!!! And with a Bonanza coax press, very accurate reloads with neck reamed cases!!!! Very few reloaders neck turned then!!! And, my neck reamed loads were much more accurate than two other neck turned reloaders/shooters @ LR!!!
