Neck Turning for F-TR

Is anyone turning necks for F-TR? Do you see a noticeable difference on target?

I held off from turning necks when I started shooting because I wanted to spend time practicing instead of in the reloading room but now I'm considering it for next season.

After I fire form my brass, I turn just enough to even the neck thickness all the way around. My neck tension is consistent from case to case.

There are a some of the top guys who do turn, and a lot that dont. Do what gives you the most confidence in your ammo.

Ive done nothing, partial clean up and full clean up. Never shot the difference.

@XTR doesnt turn and usually posts some of the highest x counts in the results.

But... @Down South does and he's the national champ. So... :D

I do it because it's not that hard and you only have to do it once. I know for a fact you can get F Class-grade accuracy without turning. What turning does for me is make neck sizing more consistent - as brass hardens, you get a case that may not size quite the same as another if it's .001" thicker (which is typical of Lapua unturned brass - a variation of .001" or so). Given that a thou of neck tension *can* matter, that's a *potential* flyer. Might as well do what we can to eliminate that one bad shot. But otherwise, I don't think there's a significant accuracy benefit in the context of F Class. I don't anneal, so mileage may vary.

What Ned said. I have a tight neck chamber on my .223 which dictates that I turn the necks. Just finished 101 of them this morning. Had one extra in the box!

I agree with what the others have said...
There are clearly examples of excellent performance that can be seen without neck turning, and also ones where that couldn't happen without it.
For me, I don't shoot Bench Rest so I don't have chambers that require turning.

On the other hand, the quality of the virgin brass can also make it a measurable benefit. Not that long ago, brass wasn't as likely to be the best and we had to test and decide for ourselves if that uneven neck would get turned. Nowadays, I have opened batches of brass that don't really need turning and it is far more common than it used to be. A different reason for some guys was to keep that neck wall thickness dimension the same regardless of the brand of brass. For example, to keep all their bushings the same.

I would say it is also one of the easiest things to answer for yourself. Do everything the same in a side by side test and turn one batch and while comparing to a control sample of no-turn. Let your targets tell you if there is a benefit.

Thank you for the input everyone

I shoot a .342 neck chamber. I am talking about skim turning for uniformity
i'd say "don't bother." When we tested turned vs no-turn 284 WINS, saw no difference on the target. Every rifle we used at the FO-team matches in the nats this year had no-turn chambers and brass...we did ok with them. Recently cut over all my TR rifles to no-turn chambers...shoot as good as ever...with me still the limiting factor :)

I have No-turn chambers in both my TR and Open rifles , and I tried doing the "clean-up" skim cut to see if it made a difference . It did .
I dropped a avg. 8 points per relay with those cases . Twenty-five brand new cases in the trash . No reason to turn brass for a standard "No-turn" chamber , if you are using a expander on the neck .

Regardless of whether I have a no-turn neck or not, I at least push the inconsistencies to the outside with an expander mandrel, the do a light clean up pass. I sleep better knowing that is one inconsistency that is taken care of. Besides, I like turning brass.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

I think you might need to look elsewhere for the cause of those dropped points. Whether the load needed some re-adjusting after neck turning (some turner can screw with neck tension on the first firing) or the process was just plain done incorrectly... I've shot many, many thousands of rounds with neck turned brass in no-turn chambers over the years, with a reasonable degree of success ;)

I fully intend to cleanup not classic turning. Cant immagine making them uniform could hurt.

It definitely doesn't hurt to make it more uniform. I turn because it's quick and easy with the 21st Century lathe and you only have to do it once. I have many friends that don't turn and get excellent results as well so is it necessary? I don't think so but I do it anyway, I do a lot of things that probably aren't necessary......lol

Me too Jade, but I'm always trying to shorten that long list! :-)

You mean I wasted that whole thirty-five years in the tool-room , and never learned to turn brass properly ? Good to know .
