Neck turning 30br questions

So ive read all I can on preping 30br brass from 6br. I have a couple of questions that I havent found answers to. One or two will be opinions.
Also, I have never turned brass before.

From everything i've read, After necking up 6br brass you're left with a donut, do you need to do anything to the inside of the neck to rid yourself of said donut?

What angle cutter do you all use for 30br?

Whats your preferred neck turning tool(s)? I like the looks of the 21 century neck turning lathe.

Thanks fellas

You’re gonna love this cartridge! First off you’re going to mess up some cases getting a feel for everything and getting your tooling set up. I would suggest getting cheap .243 Winchester brass or any kind of range pick up brass of the 6mm variety. This will give you plenty of practical experience expanding up your brass and turning to your desired thickness. And take it all the way to completion, meaning seat the bullet you plan to use in your rifle and get some good micrometer reading for your overall neck diameter of a loaded round. This is the simplest and most effective way to figure out how much you need to remove from your “good” brass. Once you’ve made adjustments to your neck turning tool it’s set forever unless you change it.

To start with don’t worry about the inside of the necks, the bullets we run in the 30BR are too short to ever reach the neck shoulder junction so it should never cause any problems.

The angle for the BR case is a 30 degree cutter.

As far as what to buy, that depends greatly upon your budget. All of them will accomplish the goal, so find one that appeals to you and your budget. I’ve tried a lot of different ones and for the money they all did what they were supposed to. I’ll ask if this is the only cartridge you plan to neck turn for? If so then one of the PMA model B is a gem for the set it and forget it type turner. If you want to expand beyond just the 30BR then look for one that is easier to adjust. A lot of people go with the inexpensive ones and leave them set for a particular cartridge or thickness and just add to their collection each time they add a new cartridge to turn necks for.

Whichever route you go in the end the 30BR is a great cartridge and you’ll have a lot of fun with it……..but right now the H4198 powder that is the go to powder for it is as rare as hen’s teeth!

Hahaha, I was thinking to myself, if I get 200 pieces of brass, hopefully I'll still have 150 when im done. Great idea! I actually have 15 or so pieces of 243 brass, so I will do that! I have a 6br that id like to start turning necks. For the price of that PMA I could get one for 30 br and one for 6br and it would still be cheaper than the 21st century by well over $100.

Thanks for all the great information, really appreciate it!!

If you're turning a lot off your necks (say for a .262 ppc) most people do it in two steps, a rough cut - and a finish cut. Taking most of the material off on the first cut and the final amount on the second. This takes changing your cutting depth or have two cutters already set up.
