Neck Turn Tool??

What is everyone using here??

Pros...cons....likes.....dislikes.

I'm looking for something to replace my current "rig"......

Thanks!

I just switched recently to the PMA. Very smooth. Very precise. But most of all, it feels good in my hand. Pat makes and sells wonderful products. I like them so much I now own 3. Will probably buy a 4th some time next year.

I bought the 21st Century Neck Turning Lathe and have found it to be fast, accurate and easy to use. I turn in two steps and usually prepare lots of 200 to 400 cases. So, that means 400 to 800 turning operations per lot and speed matters to me. With the two pass approach, I am very reliably holding ±.0001" neck thickness using a cordless drill as power source. The case holder is very good and uses easily replaced O-rings to drive the case. [br]
My previous tools were Marquart and Sinclair. I've been turning necks since 1980 and have never had such as easy time of it. Highly recommended. It can be seen in this Daily Bulletin. [br]

dansig - Here is what another member told me about his experience with the Ergo holder. I have a nerve problem in my left hand and bought one, but now afraid to use it:

Greetings. The holder may indeed help you considering the nerve trouble. What happens is tightening down the set screw aginst the turner, "squeezes" the turner, causing it to cut the neck smaller. On mine it cut .0002" smaller neck thickness, which equates to .0004" total outside diameter reduction. I measure every case after turning with a case neck micrometer, so I caught it right away. How much smaller yours will cut when securing the turner inside the holder will depend on how tight you turn the set screw, at least up to the point the turner no longer compresses together. This will be no problem at all if you clamp the turner into the holder from the start. I had been using mine without the holder and decided to try the holder. Since I had already been turning to finished dimension, I had to readjust the cutter position. This was not a big deal, but could be if you have the dimension set, clamp the turner inside the holder, and then turn dozens of cases without checking the neck thickness. Hope this helps and that my explanation was not confusing.

Another vote for the 21st with lathe. Fast and accurate. I have two cutters set up. One for the .308 and another for the 6BR.

I use a De Walt cordless driver for power.

I don't know what tool he used to tighten the cutter in the ergo holder, it doesn't need to be that tight, just barey finger tightened and it doesn't change cutting depth that way.

the cutout in the ergo holder is very precise and the cutter is extremely tight in it, the stop screw just needs to touch the cutter to secure it, it doesn't need to be tight.

I feel that if I continue to have problems with my left wrist, I may have to sell my K&M stuff and go to the 21st Century. I feel that I would not be losing any if I were to have to do that. A friend of mine has the 21st Century and truly loves it.

No one has mentioned the Nielson Pumpkin, so I'll throw that one in.

It's expensive, but extremely easy to use.

Some folks complain about how tight the mandrel on the turner is after expanding on the Nielson expander. If you get there and find it to be a problem, you can expand on the K&M Expandiron as it is a skosh larger.

I use all my turners with PBike's neck turning engine. Paul is a great guy and great to do business with. Now, if I can just learn to spell and pronounce his last name.... 8)

Had a 21 century....

Bought a Time Precision on a recommendation, very nice unit, nice and adjustable, well built, but you cannot get an expander mandrel from them only another turning mandrel and hope to rig up something to hold it. That and the cutter is not radiused at the shoulder nor angled to match the case.

Finally did the right thing and bought a Pumpkin, you can probably find enough pros on them with a search so I won't list them all here. It cost a bit but less than what I had wasted on 2 previous turners.....old old old lesson learned once again.

I find the Sinclair 4K easier to adjust. Almost as easy as the Pumpkin.

A trick that some might find useful is sitting the turner on a ziplock of ice between cases to nix heat buildup.

Before anyone beats me up, it's a 332 neck.
