Neck sizing issue

Thanks for the help in advance.

I just bought an RCBS neck sizing die in 7mm Rem Mag from my local store. As I started to use it yesterday I

realized that it was shaving my case necks on one side of the case. I thought that it was a bad case and so I

tried another one and it did the same thing. I striped the die apart to inspect and reclean the inside of it and I

didn't find anything that was causing the issue. Also I reset my die in the press to make sure I had done it the

correct way.

Well still shaving about 1/4 of the neck wall on the case. A sales clerk recommended using dry lube and I tried

that today and still having the same results. Not sure if I have a bad die or what's going on. I did search the

topic here and understand that most of you guys recommend FL sizing, but still want to know what is going on

with my die.

I do have a Redding FL set to try, and the brass that I am using is once fired Winchester brass that was FL

sized the first time loading.

Thanks for your time,

Levi

It sounds to me like you have a bad die. I would contact RCBS and see if they have a simple solution, otherwise you can send the die back to them so they can fix it.

Great suggestion. I had a similar issue with a Redding Die a while back and I called them up and they told me to send the die to them along with some of the brass that had been run through the die. They resolved the issue as will RCBS which has a terrific customer service section. Just call them as was suggested and I'm sure they'll help correct your issue.

My experience with RCBS customer service has been outstanding - I would go to them first rather than trying a "home made" remedy.

I assume you are using the correct shell holder for a 7mm mag.

Thanks for the help everyone. Yes I have the correct shell holder and no I do not have a turret press.
That was my though as well to contact RCBS tomorrow and see what they had to say. I just wanted
to make sure it wasn't something that I didn't have adjusted correctly and someone else had experienced
it before. I'll let everyone know what happens with this when I talk to their customer service center.

To prove the point, mark a case at the base with a sharpie at the base. Then size the case and pay attention to where the "shaving" occurs in relation to the index mark. Then rotate the die 180 degrees and do another piece of brass. If the "shaving" follows the die movement, it is definitely the die. Only need two pieces of brass to prove it.

LKEYES,

Let's back up and regroup here for just a minute. One, the clerk suggested using a dry lube, but were you using any sort of lube to begin with? Not uncommon for many to assume that a neck die doesn't require lube, since the body shouldn't be contacting the die to begin with. Nope, they still need to be lubed, and I'd recommend both the inside and outside of the necks. Unless you have a press that's seriously out of alignment (and yes, I have seen this before, but it's damned rare), I'd say what you've got going on is probably galling, not "shaving." Once galling begins, it tends to feed on itself, and gets worse with each successive piece of brass that passes through the die. I'd suggest pulling the die down, and examining the iside portion of th die in the neck area where the "shaving" is taking place. You may be abler to see some build up there. or you may not. Either way, I'd suggest cleaning the die, thoroughly, with a good bore solvent and a bronze brush. Reassemble, lube the next cases and see what happens. My guess is they'll pass through just fine, and the shaving will disappear.

Give this a shot, and let us know what happens.

Kevin,
So I just went and tried your suggestion with stripping the die apart, scrubbing down the inside with a good solvent, Butches Bore Shine, with a
Brass brush and relube the inside, as well as lube the case really well, both inside and out. Well it didn't seam to make a difference and still shaved the one side, about a 1/4, of the case neck. If anyone
wants to see the case just pm me your email and I'll send you some pics. I did talk to RCBS today and they couldn't believe what was going on and
told me to send it down to them and they would inspect it, with a case, and either fix it or replace, plus refund the shipping cost to them. I really
appreciate that.

The funny thing is that I have used my new press, a Rock Chucker, to load up close to 750 rounds so far and haven't had any hitch in it's performance
so far. I did use a Redding 22-250 neck sizer to do most of that work and it didn't have any problems either.

Thanks again for all the help and suggestions from everyone. I'll let everyone know what I hear from RCBS.
