Neck size

I have a new 6.5-284 barrel with a .296 neck. My problem is I have some nice Lapua brass left over from an earlier barrel with a tighter neck. This brass is .0125 neck thickness. Do I need to scrap this brass and buy new brass?By my calculation the ideal neck would be .014. What do the experts think. Thanks JVON

The neck on my 6.5 WSSM is .301, and it is a TIGHT NECK that needs a fair amount of neck turning.

So, .296 is not a huge neck for ALL 264 calibers.

As far as the OP, I some times shoot my 300 wby brass turned for a .330 neck in other chambers which have .336 necks. Not a problem, but, simply load up a few and see how they shoot. You may need to anneal to keep them going.

Good luck,
Tod

My 6.5wssm has a .291 neck, and I turn to 13thou thickness, which is normal thickness (loaded necks at .290).
10thou larger than this(.301) is in no way normal.

JVON, perhaps you ought to read the article on 6.5/284 on the 6BR website. Pay particular attention to what the Hoovers have to say. :)

You are only using .001 neck clearance? That kind if tight isn't it.?
No, it isn't tight for me. I have no more clearance anywhere with this chamber, and my loaded ammo TIR is well under it (totally straight).
There is no basis for excess clearances with well designed and well put together ammo. That said, I would not recommend it otherwise.

I am not sure what "normal" is, but I baught four bags of fifty Winchester 25 WSSM brass, all happen to be different lot numbers, and all needed to be turned. I run .2990 loaded diameter for my .301 neck.

Brass thickness regardless of cal is usually 12-14thou, and I would think normal neck clearances, where you have control, is 2-3thou. Beyond this is excessive IMO.

WSSM is nowhere near 'normal' given that it's necks come out of the bag at ~19-24thou thick, depending on cal.
It should be turned to standard neck thickness and clearances if you intend standard performance.

.296 is just a huge neck for 26cal. You'll have to continually anneal necks just to keep the brass going.

Mike. I don't agree with that at all. My 260 Rems have a .297 neck and I'm using Lapua brass. Regards JCS
