Neck Graphite ?

Have read that after sonic cleaning some shooters are lubing the inside of neck with graphite, on theory that necks are too clean. Anyone do this, and if so what type of graphite and how is this done ( I am guessing after powder is in case ).

It's got graphite mixed in with ceramic bearings you dip the necks into.

Ground mica is a lot less nasty for staining clothes and hands than graphite. I use it when neck sizing/expanding, not because clean brass is too clean.

Signut -

Howdy !

I've always inside-neck lubed my precision rilfe brass, prior to bullet seating. This, after reading reports that the process helps uniform bullet retention forces exerted by the neck' brass. IMHO - it works.

I've also used it in those instances where I am using an expander ( mandrel or " ball" ) on the brass.
I can feel the difference between lubed and non-lubed effort.

Motor mica does nicely also, but... it's not as readily available as powdered graphite; which one can obtain @ hardware and auto parts stores.

Graphite works very well, but I switched to Mica to keep from getting black all over me. I use it also when neck sizeing only. I have a small plastic bullet box with some number 12 shot in it and just put some Mica in it. Shake it up and then just stick the case necks into the shot, works great.

I had terrible results using Mica. Excellent results with graphite. Was a long time ago that I tried Mica and maybe I did something wrong but,,,,
Dumped it in the trash and switched to the graphite that day. Problem solved. Never went back.

If you are lubing before powdering, how much is getting washed off when you drop the powder?

Charlie, it’s a good question.

I examined the necks after I dip them and wipe the outside off and then after powder drop and most of it was still there which surprised me and that was with TAC which is a ball powder.

As a precaution, I also dip the bullets and that combo seems to do the trick. For those that don’t like getting graphite on their fingers ;D, I hold the bullet with a fine pair of tweezers when I dip them in the graphite which actually gives you better control as holding the bullet with your fingers on the ogive is difficult since it always seems to want to slip off.

I tried this today and it worked great with Varget. No need to do the bullets, too. I use a Satern funnel (specific for the 6mm) and it drops it straight down for my Dasher brass. Best funnel I ever used.

I thought of using graphite also but wondered if it would contribute to carbon rings....my understanding is that graphite IS pure carbon....any thoughts?
