Additional post to "cleaning the necks"

Read the entire subject, and have one question about this subject....Does tumbling the case in walnut media remove the carbon buildup inside the case neck? I figured that as hard as it is to get the carbon ring out of a barrel, that tumbling for an hour wouldn't take the carbon out of the neck. If it does, i want to start coating the id of my necks....can Hbn be used, or is graphite/alcohol better? Does anyone use Hbn/alcohol mix for the id of necks? I already have the Hbn/alcohol mix for my bore, and Hbn coating on my bullets, so i have that. If graphite is better. would the lockeez graphite powder be ok? Thanks, and sorry for the long read..Also, how do i get the subject line on my posts to show in bold letters like most show?.rsbhunter

A little. You can get them TOO CLEAN!!
A nylon brush will get some out but remember, the burnt carbon acts as a lube when seating bullets. Get the insides of the necks too clean and you have to add a lube so you don't end up crushing the necks down into the shoulders when seating your bullets.

I normally take a nylon bore brush and run it in and out once to clean out the residue dust from tumbling......I'm really interested in trying both Hbn and graphite in seperate case necks to see the results on target.....maybe it will make me look like I can shoot! rsbhunter

I have tumbled in both walnut and corn cob, the treated corn cob cleans the inside better. I use Lyman media, yes it costs more, but the end result is far better.
TBH, I don’t see a difference on my necks due to the graphite powder, but once fired cases look cleaner when they come out, in the necks.

When I sonic cleaned, the cases were so ‘squeeky’ clean that bullet seating was horrendous......don’t do that anymore.

Cheers.
:)

If you are already using coated bullets I doubt adding anythig to the inside neck of the cases will do anything worthwhile.

Umm, yeah tumbling will remove some of the gunk inside the case mouths, but I have never been able to determine if a little soot inside the case neck was problematic. The only place where this might be necessary is in ultra accurate rifle ammo and it may be a neck tension "issue"...

Carbon in necks is not a problem, and in no way affects tension. As mentioned earlier squeaky clean necks affects seating force (horribly).

I doubt any amount of dry tumbling would completely remove the carbon layer, and this is a good thing really.

I switched to wet tumbling after 25+ years of tumbling with dry . My brass comes out like brand new . I'm using brass the is thicker them most , in 308 the brass I'm using is FC , HSM & ADI I dip the bullet in Imperial Dry Lube added to the beads , puts a light coating of graphite on the bullet , bullet seating is smooth , accuracy is excellent . Is alittle more work but is worth the added effort . Once you found a load combination the works , as long as you repeat your reloading system everytime , everytime at the bench is great . Only thing you have to concentrate on is your form .

For me the old standard lyman tumbler with the media removes just enough inside the neck, I dont want them "new" on the inside. The outside I "polish" up with some 0000 steel wool in a drill to make sure my necks are shiny clean when I size them. I dont shoot high volumes so the extra time is a non issue for me
