neck bushing size for a .223 remington

Fox,
I cannot answer your question directly because all my 223 brass is LC and Fed which may as well be the same. I can offer some advice. Take a couple rounds of the Rem and the Lapua, and measure the neck thickness, requires tubing mics) double and add to .244 - you neck bushing should be .002 to .003 smaller than this number.

If you don't have a tubing mic, but do have a regular mic or caliper then jam bullets in a couple rounds and measure the diameter. Again your bushing would be .002 to .003 less.

gunamonth - thanks for pointing out the 'FAT FINGER' syndrome.

Fox,

From my experience, Rem brass is similar in thickness to the LC brass that i use - neck wall thickness of about .0115. The calculated neck diameter of the loaded round should be .247. In actual practice, the neck O.D. of my loaded rounds is the same - .247. So, you would need a .244 bushing to yield a neck tension of .003 and a .245 bushing for a neck tension of .002.

My Lapua brass is thicker - neck wall thickness is .0125. The calculated neck O.D. of a loaded round should be .249,2 x .0125 plus .224 = .249). The actual measured neck O.D. of my loaded rounds is .250. So, for the Lapua brass I use a bushing size of .248 to result in a neck tension of .002

Remember that the 'real' neck tension is the neck outside diameter of the loaded round minus the neck O.D. of the sized case. By actually measuring the neck O.D. of the sized case, this would account for any 'springback' effect of the brass after sizing with a particular neck bushing. You can't assume that sizing with a particular bushing size would result in a neck O.D. of that same size.
