Neat little gun

From an article 1978 #59 Rifle Magazine. I was lucky enough to get to stop out and check on the progress of this build. I should add, he did build his dream rectangular falling block. Something he couldn't do till he had access to a wire edm some years later.

I remember a time when i was about 14yrs old we were all still surrounded by machines. We use to produce some of the best products in the world. When the USA goes into production the world starves. Thats a fact.
I was part of a generation who was supposed to graduate high school and go work for Timkens or Union metal, Republic steel, LTV steel .every one had welding or maching equipment at their home..or you could walk over to the shop and do things their..they ran 24hrs.
It was a completely different world..you could manufacture your own auto parts, gun parts crazy electrical inventions or even little things to make your bicycle more cool. if you couldnt do it. Your parents would say..walk down and ask Mr. So and so he would like to hear your idea...some retired old man down the street would say come with me kid..next thing you know your in a dark grimy machine shop with 2 old timers ..it was cool and i was part of it. Now its absolutely gone, wipe from the face of our country..they couldn't ship those machines to china fast enough..
What a drastic change
Life is jast fake..is has no substance now.

Nice article thanks i dont mean to sound all dark and dreary..that article sparked some old memories still clunking around in my head.

I remember a time when men can home about 4 got cleaned up that was a new t-shirt and those green or blue pants all the machine operator would have on at the time...thats when you sat down with dad and got beat for fighting in school or some other drama.
Im sure a lot of you know just what im talking about.

Thats when men worked and learned a trade and got good at it. Everything was earned. Im not that old but i can see what you mean. A lot has been lost in todays world once these old timers are gone. They dont make many men anymore w thick skin. If you cant push a button it doesnt get done. Shame. Thin skin and elephant ears. My hats off to anyone in a trade today thats earned there place and put the time and effort in. Nice article.

Also the pioneers in small bores didn't have the internet. Information you might never find with out knowing the right person, is readily available.

And some of those home machine or welding shops were better than others! My uncle had one. But his mud driveway was paved and reinforced with buried sockets, wrenches, tools and various parts of detrius burned off with a torch. He weren't much of a builder!

My boys are in their 20s, one is a carpenter, and the other works as a metal fabricator and makes holsters on the side.

Time is money, and with all the debt accrued by previous generations, working with your hands means that you aren't going to make a whole lot. Learning to use automation for improving throughput is where it's at. CNC, robotics, 3D printing, etc are all helping to improve throughput.
