NC. Shooters! At Butner. I have some questions?

Any of you guy's that are shooting comp at Butner, Please Chime in!!

I have spent the last year preparing to shoot some comp some where. I have seen on the Northstate gun club site that they are having the state F class champs this weekend. I thought about attending this match. (As a spectator).

I'm interested in F open, FTR, and Bench Rest. How ever I have had my fill of sitting on my duff, and reading about matches, or trying to figure out how things are run or the do and don'ts!

I have never shot any kind of comp ever. I have shot all my life and have learned alot. However I feel that I have learn about all that I am going to learn on my own! Meaning Reading books asking questions on the net and then trying to put the things that I have read, or learn into practice. Many of those things have really paid off, and I have learned a lot. But until I get into some pier pressure or some kinda comp, to give me some kind of direction I'm about dead in the water here!

In other words I would love to shoot this match. But!! AND that's A big butt! I don't want to show up at the state champs to shoot and start trying to figure out where I'm suppose to go. What I'm suppose to do, as well how I'm suppose to conduct myself, as to giving respect to other shooters, and following the rules of the range. Again I have no Idea of what I'm doing as far as shooting a match! How things are run? When shooters are to go to the line? How to set up and get ready, but not disrepect anyone? This is the reason for wanting to go as a spectator only. I have many questions, but I don't want to distract a shooter with a lot of newbie questions when he maybe trying to get ready to shoot for the champs! As well after a shooter has shot his relay an may be dissussing his preformance with another shooter, I think it would be rude for me to walk up and start asking a bunch of dumb questions about things. I have a lot to learn. I'm really not worried about my ablity to shoot as much as what to do and how to act or when to ask question or not to, at a match? I'm trying to get into the game without disrespecting anyone or steping where I don't belong? I need some kind of advice as to when to ask questions or what to keep my eyes on? So that I can learn how to prepare as well set up and not disrespect others?

Thanks for any advice that you can give!!

Mark,
Grab a copy of the NRA high power rules and read through it. go to a local club 3x600 prone match and have fun. ask questions...lots of questions. Ask the match director if he can buddy you up with a good shooter who likes to help folks. between the rule book and a good mentor you will have a blast!! i don't shoot bench rest (yet) i am a lowly service rifle shooter but would love to buddy up with you if you find yourself around annapolis, quantico, or bridgeville (DE) all those clubs around there will take care of you! Thanks for getting involved the more shooters the better the sport gets. i am not sure a National Level match or State championship will be the best place to start your competetive career, but if it the only time you can get out to shoot, grab your stuff and go. Shoot well, and shoot again.

Cheers,
Doc

Mark,

As a Board of Director member at North State Shooting Club, I can say with confidence that the shooters that attend the matches there are going to go out of their way to help you.

If you have any doubt on who to talk to, I would go to our website and go to the club officer page. It will have the name and photo of all the officers and board members. Seek these people out and if they do not have time to answer all your questions, they will point you to someone who will.

This match is hosted by the NC Rifle and Pistol Association, but we are really one big family anyway. Our number one mission is to provide a friendly, family oriented environment for shooters. We LOVE to see new shooters that are like yourself. Passionate about the sport and willing to learn.

I would go planning to shoot both days, but if you do not feel comfortable with that and you are close to Butner you may want to observe one day and shoot the next. David McFarling will be the Match Director and I am sure there will be no problem with you shooting the second day. Just tell him you are a new shooter and they will accomodate you.

Have fun and emil me if you have any more questions.

Nowind0,
Thanks for the info. I'm going to have to put my trip to Butner off until the 2nd. day because of work. I plan to attend Sun. It's probably best If I go just to watch try and look listin and learn what I can. I will probably send you a email also. I do have a few more question about some of the matches on later dates.
Thanks
Mark

Mark,
Glad you got to come and shoot with us. I'll bet you had no idea that you would be teamed with a National LR Champion and Palma Team member for the team match that day! Congrats on your 145 (15 shot match) score! Please come again. I was the gray-haired guy on 16 that showed you how to score targets.

Mike,
Yes you are exactly right! I was beside myself for a cpl of days! It really sunk in on the way home how many great shooters I was around last Sun. I feel very fortunate to have been in everyone's presents. Thanks for your help and teaching me how to score, as well some tips on wind and mirage. It did help, so thanks again! I still have a lot to learn, but I'll get there. I love this stuff too much not to! You can count me in to be back. I will definitely be back to Butner many times. I know exactly who you are. I was trying to absorb and learn as much as I could, so it was hard for me to keep up with everyones name and I apologize for that. However I do remember all the faces that day for sure! I a planning on being at the fall 600yrd weekend. At least to send rounds down range and enjoy myself, weather I hit anything or not we will see lol. Either way I'm sure I'll enjoy it regardless. Thanks for your hosppitality!
