NBRSA member ?

I was a member of IBS a few years back but quit. I shot many tournaments since there are three ranges within driving distance of my home. When I was part of these shoots the cost was $30 a shoot. It steadily increased now to $75 a shoot. The attendance back when I was part of these shoots was 28 - 30 shooters, now it's lucky if they get10 shooters. When I did shoot my competition was myself. I tried to do better than I did the previous shoot. My best group was 1.215" at 600 yards. I still go to the range at least once a week to shoot and my competition is still myself. I know of at least 10 shooters that have quit shooting these tournaments due to the cost.
I hate to hear this. I have heard this kind of thing before. Honestly I never understood it or the problem some have with annual dues of I think $60
Match fees and annual membership is pretty minimal in my opinion

I was a member for a couple years 2005-2009 when I lived in Ohio attending the Super Shoot during that time.
I've been a member of IBS since 2007 .

Long time member of both the NBRSA and IBS. Even though I may not shoot that many matches I feel it is important to retain my membership in both organizations. All support is needed. I would also like to thank all the match directors and clubs that are willing to hold registered matches. They are the backbone of the sport.

Much appreciated support for sure

Been a member for about 5 years i guess nbrsa. Have never shot a match i live in East TN. There is no ranges close to me. Wish there was more ranges in my area that shot group matches. Been aiming to go shot a match at river bend. But that is still 5 hours from me. I know there is a few score matches closer too me but i like shooting groups better. I still pay my dues just so I can keep up with the shooters and support the sport that I hope one i will get to shot..

Good article. But, he left out a huge number of benchrest shooters, those of us who shoot score. Not a complaint, just an observation.

Why score? Well some of it has to do with moving backers. You just can't hold a sanctioned group match without them. Every target is shot with a moving strip of paper placed specified distances behind the target itself. 3' at 100 yds, 6' at 200 and 9' at 300. The sanctioning body cannot be sure that every shooters has fired their 5 record shots per target without it.

Score does not require moving backers since there are 5 record bulls per target plus a sight bull. Easy to determine if each is shot.

In my mind, in addition to what was mentioned in the article, one of the high points of benchrest and the procedures utilized in it that can be taken up by hunters or other discipline shooters is in the loading of really good ammo. All in all its a great sport, addictive as ell and a great group of people to visit at matches.

Plus one on this.
I shoot both Group and Score, each requires extreme accuracy, and each has it’s particular aspect that makes that Discipline a challenge.

Another good reason to join the NBRSA in addition to the informative magazine articles, is the new Mentorship Program. Established regionally, it allows new members to get a jump start to competitive Benchrest shooting. For more information, go to NBRSA.org; https://www.nbrsa.org/new-shooters-portal/. You can go from a good local club shooter to a highly competitive regional/national shooter! Check it out.
