Nationals Moving From Camp Perry

Hell hath frozen over!

Had to make sure that wasn't on the Onion.

So, what does Camp Atterberry offer that Perry does not?
No CMP! For the last few years the CMP and NRA have not gotten along too well. I understand that CMP garnered all the choice dates for 2017 and left NRA with matches starting just after July 4th, which would be a travel day for us long range shooters. The move isn't final until the NRA BOD approves it which may or may not happen. If it's a better shooting experience, fine, I can live with it. Still, a ballsey move by the NRA.

Interesting. I was born and lived the first 40 years of my life in Indiana. I have hunted quail on the Base years ago and it is huge. I have never competed at Perry or Atterburry so I have no way to compare the two but I can see several potential advantages to the move. First, Camp Atterbury is located immediately adjacent to I-65 and easily reached via the Interstate System. Indianapolis to the north has 4 Interstate Highways feeding into it. Columbus IN. is only a short distance to the South on I-65 and is a city of over 45,000. The State is receptive to improving infracture in the area to handle the Matches and new or improved ranges could definitely be part of that. The State is very gun friendly, although to be fair Ohio is not hostile to gun rights either. Also the area is slightly more centrally located than Perry for shooters coming from the South and West. With the ranges capable of handling national matches developed that will provide an additional potential site for F-class matches. The issue of electronic targets or not I won't take a position on but with new range construction a possibility, it could be designed from the start for this. If the NRA BOD approves it I think it will be a good move in the long run.

Looks like the $hit is slinging fast!

"In an effort to continue to attract new competitors and to reward the thousands who annually participate in our matches, the CMP will add new pistol, smallbore, high power rifle, and long range rifle matches in 2018," said Mark Johnson, CMP Chief Operating Officer.

I am stunned that the @5%& CMP can get away with doing this to the shooters that they say they support.
I hope beelzelub {spelling} has a special place for the @#&5 that run the CMP.

I hate the CMP, especially now that I have gotten confirmation that they have forced the NRA out and are trying to eclipse them.

Speaking from a strictly monetary point of view. Can anyone confirm how much money the CMP has spent on lobbying to keep our gun rights? (as opposed to the NRA)
The phrase money talks and BS walks keeps jumping to my head.

Follow the money trail. Somebody with deep pockets and connections wants that property and wants it bad.
ATA in Vandalia, Ohio packed up and moved to Southern Illinois, after over 100 years there.
MCAS El Toro and Tustin packed up and moved to Pendleton and NAS Miramar. Houses now where the air bases use to be.

Let's never forget that the Military does not 'own' property but actually leases it from the States. When or if they depart, the property reverts back to the State. The Fed cannot sell anything they don't own. MOST Military bases are in locations that no one wanted when they were created, but now have value as the communities expanded around them. Concord Naval Weapons Depot classic. Northern California weapons/ordinance storage bunkers. When the wars on that side of the world slowly ceased, they moved everything to Seal Beach California. Investors salivated thinking they were going to move in. The city of Concord then owned the land and locked it up from developers. It sits now waiting for planned growth projects. I lived in Indiana and Atterbury is a nice range. With this money it will grow into something special.

Many of our Military installations are located on a Federal Enclave. The Federal Government has complete jurisdiction and ownership of that land. Camp Pendleton is one example. It has been a Federal Enclave since 1942. The State of California does not own that vast chunk of land. It was acquired by the Federal Government via cession.

As for Camp Pendleton and I suspect the same is true about other military installations, a chat with the Base Commander goes a long way. Been a while, but as I recall not all that long ago, members of the San Clemente Gun Club (or similar group) had been shooting on the base ranges for years. Something changed and they were about to get the boot. But after the Gun President had a talk with the Base Commander, they reinstated the group's ability to shoot, last I heard. I know back in the 80's, Law Enforcement SWAT Sniper Teams had their classes down there and we had some good times both in shooting and rubbing elbows with some of the Marine Snipers that administered the class.
