So yesterday we had our big annual event at the Catawba Valley Wildlife Club. Tons of free events for the kids, the club is completely open to the public that day. As Rifle Range chairman I run the 100 yard egg shoot. I have done this for our local children for 16 years and it has been very rewarding.
We use to have two age classes, 6 - 11 and 12 - 16 with shoot offs for ties and trophies.
As interest has waned and kids rarely getting outside anymore, we just do the 6 - 16 class and give ribbons for 1, 2 or 3 busted eggs. I furnish the eggs, the ammo and the rifles out my own pocket.
This year I brought the H & R M12 with it's period correct yard long Redfield sitting on top and a bull barreled Savage Mk 2 with 4 -12 Leupold. The other volunteer brought a beautiful Remington 514.
Ammo was Federal Automatch, picked for it's price point, reliability and decent accuracy.
Someone was nice enough to set the egg boxes for me but arriving at 6:30 am having made sure my business partner was going to have the shop open, I procured clay pigeons for sighter shots, set eggs in the boxes, got the range house ready to go. My volunteers wondered in at 9 am, the event began.
I was there till almost 4 p.m.
Only 85 kids showed up this year after local newspaper advertisements, billboards and local radio announcements.
I was to involved to snap a few pics, I apologize. I really worry about the future of hunting and shooting sports.
