N133 powder

N135 may be closer

N135 is too fast burning for either 6.5. It's a good 223 powder with 55-70s. It is the canister version of Viht's specialised bulk propellant optimised for the standard European 7.62 NATO ball loading of a generation ago, ie a 142-147gn FMJBT bullet at 2,800 fps nominal from a 20-inch barrel. As a rule, it turns out to be on the fast side for 155s in 308 and 80s in 223. The late Glenn Zediker mentions it in The Competitive AR-15 as seeing some early use in XTC 223 with 69-80gn bullets shortly after Viht's arrival in the US but it proved too 'peaky' with the 80s and was quickly overtaken by N140 for this bullet weight after that became available.

Hmmm, so use N133 very cautiously in .223?

Only depending on bullet weight. It's ideal for 40-53s in the cartridge, and usable if not always optimal for 55 to 70gn bullets. Some 25 years ago, I must have shot a couple of thousand or more 52gn AMaxes in a very early production Remington 700VS using this powder with excellent results. After a long gap, I now use it again in the little 6.5mm Grendel with 107-123gn bullets with excellent groups if not the highest available MVs.

If you look at Viht's extensive data in its rifle reloading online pages, you'll see that in 223, N135 starts to give higher MVs even with 52gn bullets and upwards of 55gn, the considerably slower burning N140 grade also pulls ahead. The heaviest bullet Viht quotes a load for with N133 is the 75gn Berger VLD, and at this weight N135 gives MVs getting on for 100 fps higher and N140 130 fps.
