N 540 in a dasher?

I too am curious what this combo produced.
I am testing N-140 and N-135 at this time.
I think @ShootDots gave these a good go a couple of years ago, maybe he will share what he learned.

In one of my "early" 6 Dashers I used it (N540) with a Berger105VLD. With 33.0grs of N540 (mind you this was the "pre" reformulation when it was temp sensitive) it produced 3080f.p.s. out of a 30" barrel. It was phenomenally accurate. Since I move to Tennessee, where the winds are a bit milder than either Texas or Arizona, I tried a 6 Dasher again, however, with the NEW reformulated N540. I am using the Berger 108BT and 32.8grs of N540. Still superbly accurate BUT the velocity is 2990.. I think during the reformulation to make it temp-stable, they reduced the Nitro content, which is fine with me. 2990 with a very temp stable, clean burning and lot-to-lot consistent powder is a BIG winner for me!

What primer did you find to work the best? Thanks

If so, no bad thing! N540 of around 15 years ago, early days of the F/TR class, it was really 'hot' - a real barrel burner even in 308 as some of us soon found out.

I've just tried a new lot in 223 with 77s, and it definitely gave better results than the previous generation.

Thanks for the replies, I tried N-540 in my 300 RSAUM back in 2007, smoking little 3shot groups and an avg. velocity of 3090 fps with a 165 Gr. SGK. Really sweet combination for a hunting rifle. I ran out a few years ago and now have an unopened 8 pounder made in 2020. Will have to test in in my new Dasher when my smith completes it. Oh and Laurie was correct the old stuff could cook a barrel in a heart beat. Fortunately my 300 SAUM it could be shot slowly and not being a competition rifle, I'm happy to say it's still going strong. ;)

I just shot some 2021 N-540 in a dasher this morning, 3085 fps at 33.0gr with 103's.
Looks similar to your old lot numbers?
