N 135

Is anybody using N135 in a 30BR, and if so how are your results?
I've been using it in my 30x47 with very good results, 41gr. at just over 3,000 fps with a SD of 8, 120gr bullet.
According to the books it can also be used for 6BR, but I can't try it until I get my barrel.
If it is compatible with a 30x47 and a 6BR why not the 30BR. I have a little over 20lbs. and would like to start consolidating powders and try to get down to one that is obtainable almost always.
What are your thoughts?

N-135 is a fairly bulky powder.. Thus you will not get enough in the case to reach even mid level pressures.

N-135 works in the 6 BR with heavy 105+ gr bullets and the 6 BR is overbore compared to the 30 BR.

Someone with more knowledge should reply shortly.

Never tried it but I think it would be hard to get enough in the case to work due to the case fill with N-130 and some loads with N133.

It may work well with heavies in a 6br but as I recall, it was designed for a 6BR but for light bullets and is one of the better if not the best option out there for that combination. Again, it might work with the heavy for caliber 6mm bullets but they don't even offer data for it in anything above 77gr bullets. Same for 30br...it may work but too slow for that one, by the numbers. Try it, but it's several steps slower than h4198, which is good but borderline slow in a 30BR.

On a side note I just tried to see how much I can put in the 30br case. I can get 34gr. in the case without crunching powder (compress), but without QL I don't know what is safe or what type of velocity numbers I would get.(24" barrel shooting SRBR)
Right now I have enough IMR4891 to get through the summer and n130 or 133 is out of stock, so it may not matter, I might end up like I did when 8208xbr when unobtainum, and I needed to find a replacement.

Here you go brother... QL spitout....

N-135

30BR 125 gr N-135.png

Charge Weight = 34 gr
Case fill = 111% (with the 125 Berger FB @ 2.300" coal)
Velocity = 2,526 fps (24"bbl)
Energy = 1,771 lb-ft
Chamber Pressure = 34,384 PSI
Muzzle Pressure = 5,065 psi
Powder burned = 94 %

Hope that gives you some idea.

I'd be cautious with respect to the VV powder files in QuickLoad. In my hands, they seem more than a bit "off". For example, a QuickLoad file for an N135 load in .223 Rem yields a fill ratio almost 10% higher than the same charge weight of H4895, even though H4895 has similarly sized kernels. Visually, the predicted fill ratio from QL was grossly overestimated. N135 also yields predicted velocities in QL that are fairly comparable to H4895, but the actual determined velocities were substantially higher. Once the burn rate has been "calibrated" in a given rifle setup to match predicted and actual velocity, the outputs seem more trustworthy. However, I have not figured out how to correct the fill ratio, which seems markedly off. In any event, I start out with substantially reduced loads, especially in .223 Rem with heavies, so the apparent discrepancies in the N135 QL files haven't bitten me yet, but they easily could have if I'd started with a load that was only "slightly reduced" according to QL. Just something to keep in mind.

Zero333 thanks for taking the time. It looks like it doesn't even come close velocity wise. It looks like the search will start for N130. I am not even going to look for Hogdon, or IMR, going to get away from their powders if I can, I'm tired of finding a load then have that powder go missing.

Ned thank you also for the time.
I see where one could easily get into trouble by trusting a ballistic program.

Midsouth has N133. Both 1 & 8 #ers. Graf's has N130 & 133 both 1 & 8#s.

Here again a powder that goes missing all the time.
I can't help that. I saw it recently but not at the moment. They've all been hard to get at times. Alliant will kill themselves with price alone. Wanna know what works in case you stumble upon it...there ya go. If not, figure it out yourself. Lol!:confused: Confused as to what you want from anybody...other than$20/lb powder everywhere. Me too!
