6BR vs 30BR

My range is 100, 200 & 300yds We shoot for score. I've noticed in windy conditions 6BR wins and in mild conditions 30BR wins Is there a rule of thumb as to wind conditions between using a 6BR instead of a 30BR (under10mph 30BR over 10mph 6BR???)

Edward,

I shoot 6BR in VFS at the Austin Rifle Club. I've won against 30s and lost to them over the years. I prefer the 6BR because it's easier to shoot (lot less recoil), cheaper to shoot (68BTs vs 115s), I'm on my 19th reload with the same brass (anneal every 3 +/- reloads) and am getting 3325 fps or so with my load (hasn't changed for almost 4K rounds and two barrels).

If you decide on the 6BR get it with either zero free bore (many users have 40 thou) that will let you use the shorter bullets and still reach the lands with adequate bullet seating depth. I've never had any issues in my 6BR and I have absolutely no idea what the free bore is, so it's likely not a killer.

Good luck either way.

Dennis

The 30BR has a .65 MOA advantage built in at 100yds, .043 MOA at 200yds and .022 MOA at 300yds. I would say that whenever the wind reaches a velocity that causes the difference in wind drift between the two to equal the cutting advantage, that is the tipping point for the 6BR over the 30BR. Also, for short range, short light bullets are usually preferred, which reduces the wind drift advantage of the 6BR over the 30BR.

Also remember, it's not the absolute wind velocity that matters. It's the calling error. If you don't read wind well, you will do better with the 6BR, if you read the wind well, you can use the added advantage of the .308 hole in windier conditions that your competition can.
