My wife's Oryx

Just got back from New Mexico. I have bought this hunt the last two years at the local Wild Sheep Foundation banquet here in MN. This hunt was donated by Tierra Encantada Outfitters from San Antonio, NM. The Gabaldon crew is awesome! The hunt took place on Ted Turner's Armendaris Ranch near Truth or Consequence, NM.

Lisa tried archery tackle first, but the winds kept the oryx spooky and sitting in a Double Bull blind is not fun!She turned down many oryx. She got tired of crawling through the cactus only to hear "I think we can do better" on several stalks. Anyway, on the fourth day she dumped this bull at 386 yards using a semi-custom 300RUM topped with a Huskemaw scope using a Barnes 180 MRX bullet. Had a great time, and can't wait to do it again!

Nice job. It's good to see hunting become a family affair. Brian Brown.

P.S. Scott were is yours? ;D

Way to go Scott & Mrs. Scott!! ;)

Beautiful animal like that in the states, pretty kool critter.

Ok we need more details; How long was the hunt? Did you take any game? Can you eat that thing & if so, whats it taste like?

Here is my bull from Dec. 2010. The hunts run for 5 days which allows for the hunter to be fairly selective. These are no game farm animals. These are free range animals planted by the Fish and Game Dept. back in the 70's as an experiment. These Oryx breed year round and have exploded in numbers. Their eyesight is amazing. The ranch we hunted borders the White Sands Missle Range where hunts are 3 days and a once in a lifetime tag.

The meat is amazing, by far the best wild game I have eaten. No wild or gamey taste and similar to moose I have had. Lisa's bull taped an inch longer on each horn than mine. Cows have longer horns than the bulls, but with less mass and appear much finer. Cows score in SCI higher, but the outfitter encourages shooting bulls because they make better trophies with the deep rings and heavy mass. By the way, she had just shot her first deer ever just a few weeks prior. A nice 8 point buck with a bow. She is getting very popular with a couple taxidermists!

PM me if you are interested in hunt info. I will get you in contact with the outfitter.

Nice Oryx! I lived in Alamogordo for 10 years and was lucky enough to draw a non-typical permit and two depredation permits. I ended up with a cow with one long horn and the other curled under for the non-typical permit. I killed a heavy 33 inch bull on a depredation hunt and also a sub-adult.

I agree with you on the meat. It is fantastic and I, too, compared it to moose after having killed a moose this fall.

You are fortunate indeed to be able to buy this hunt for a good cause. Congrats.
