My shoulder needs a brake!!

I have a Remington in .308 that needs a muzzle brake. Which muzzle brake has the ability to reduce recoil at least 50% or better? Or who makes custom brakes?

shootr,

Most all of them work. I like Harrell Prec. http://www.harrellsprec.com/

I have a PWS comp and well as a Battlecomp on my AR's. As far as the shooter goes you dont notice a difference but damn to they kill the guys behind you. I shot a match today and when I was in the back watching I can't believe how loud some are.

American Precision Arms makes a very effective brake. Check out their video. For a .308 the little bastard should be all you need. Second thought the fat bastard might be better for a .308.

I've spent thousands of dollars designing, installing and testing different brake designs over the last few years. I can say this much with certainty...the most important aspect of a brake is the exit hole diameter being the right size and the brake being absolutely parallel and concentric with the bore. Most pre-packaged brakes don't do nearly as well as a properly fitted brake, regardless of the design. There is some merit to brake design being relative to it's performance but it is dwarfed by the exit hole being too large. Bottom line...if the brake comes ready to install, it's likely NOT the best brake. FWIW--Mike Ezell

I have had great luck with the Muscle Brake from ccentershot rifles http://www.centershotrifles.com/products/
Jim makes a great brake.

I believe the most important aspect is the exit hole being bored concentric with the bore of the barrel, and also being the proper size. There is nothing wrong with a thread on and go brake as long as the threads are Threaded, not tapped. (providing the barrel was properly threaded). If they are threaded concentric with the bore there is no worries. Just my experience I Personally have made, sold/ gave away around 100 of the styles of brakes I make with good results weather they just thread it on and go, or I leave the hole small and the gunsmith finish bores it .020 over when installing. I think the bottom line is as long as it is a well made brake, and properly installed you will be good to go. There is a lot of good brakes and designs out there but some are crazy high priced.

Here is a link to my ad there is some good info and testimonials

There is also a gentleman on here who makes ported brakes that must be timed they also look like good brakes.

Hope this helps

Just be sure that you have good hearing protection! Also I pity the person shooting next to you! ::)
I usually wear hearing protection at the range, so it doesn't matter to me.

If you plan on using a break in competition be sure to read the rules carefully, some places will not allow you to use a break that discharges gas in a rearward direction.

I have a couple KDF's that seem to work very well and a couple Vais that work well. I haven't switched from one to the other on the same gun to give you an honest answer as to which is more effective, I can tell you I have a KDF on a light weight high recoil rifle and it does an exceptional job on reducing recoil.

Mike Ezzel is correct on the bore diameter playing a critial part of the felt recoil. I don't recall the best bore oversize measurment but I'm sure someone one here does and would provide that info.

John, your brake may well be an exception. I trust that your brake is true and concentric. Problem is, it, like all brakes, is dependent on the barrel threads also being concentric to the bore. There are numerous factory gun makers who can't seem to do this very well, consistently. Hence most pre fit brakes have huge exit holes that kill the brakes efficiency so as to prevent bullet interference and to keep the phone from ringing with customers who automatically blame the brake when the problem is their prized ar15 or whatever. They often could have a very good brake design that they compomise effectiveness on to prevent negative feedback from customers from bullet hit to the brake. The truth is, a good looking brake from a big name maker will almost always outsell a properly made and fitted brake from you or me...most simply don't know what they're missing.

I most likly carry the largest selection of brakes for individuale barrel sizes and cartridge applications.

And I guarantee them, if your not happy screw it off and send it back for a refund.

It is all around the most comfortable brake for the shooter combigning both recoil and concussion reduction.

get a .223. Brakes are noisy, and will damage your hearing. And the hearing of those around you. Deaf isn't fun.

I'm not sure which model will work best for .308 W but I have an American Precision Arms custom rifle with thier Fat Bastard brake. It's a 300 RUM and I shoot 210's over 3100 fps I'm guessing it's about 15 lbs and it recoils less than my 18lb GAP 308 w/o a brake. But if you put anything else on the bench it will be removed by the blast. Not pleasant for other shooter nearby, but great from behind the trigger.
