Plastina. Comes in little packets, each one is more than enough for any job. Smells like bubble gum. Easy to use. Cheap.
I used to use a non hardening sulfite free modeling clay, but digging it out of wood grain was a pain.I like playdoh - it shrinks a little bit though so you need to be careful with it

I'm tempted to just a piece of kapton tape over that whole area. Not much bedding area there anyway...Someone with a 3d printer needs to print some plugs for the trigger opening and magazine wells. Plugs could even be printed for the trigger pin holes.
