My new AICS DBM release design

Working on my first hunting rifle that will have a AICS style DBM bottom metal. Never have liked any of the DBM mag release designs for hunting applications as they can get caught or hung up and possibly release the magazine without a person knowing.

So I came up with my own design. Wish I could have showed the whole milling process, but I dont have a means to set up a camera on the mill yet. Anyhow, here's the video on my new magazine release design. A little imagination will get you pretty close to understanding how did it. Turned out really well and will be much more reliable in the field :)

Pretty innovative man. Great job. I have a Gen I HS bottom metal and mags. It has the internal trigger guard release also but it isn't easy to depress to release the mag. That button plunger looks easier. You could probably pick up a few customers with that deal. I may be one !!!

Thanks 284winner. It doesnt release as easy as a Rem 700 floor plate or anything like that. Takes decent force and I intended it to be that way. Could put a lighter spring on the latch to make it lighter, but its plenty easy to do with one finger while still providing excellent security for the magazine.

Although the plunger in the trigger guard is situated at a downward angle, the contact surface of the plunger actually matches the more vertical angle of the latch lever so it can slide up and down when activating the release. Works pretty well.

Thinking about threading the tip of the plunger in the guard and putting a small mushroom style tip on it. Would make it more comfortable to press.

I wasn't aware other manufacturers made releases this way. Good to know. I searched high and low trying to find a DBM with a release I liked. Finally said screw it an did my own thing.

Nice job...I bought a rifle that was advertised as Black Ops bottom metal...it has a button similar to that but it's bigger but I've never been able to find them online. I too like it better than what I've seen...Dusty has some good options too.

Thanks guys!

Thanks guys. Looks like I didn't do enough research on DBMs! Lots of good release designs out there that would work great for a hunting rifle application.

My biggest restriction in searching was that this bottom metal needed to be for a long action as well as fit a Rem 700 BDL inletting. I originally planned the rifle for a BDL inletting and ordered my AG Comp stock that way. Later changed my mind when I realized I would only be able to fit 2 rounds of 300 Norma Improved brass in a BDL mag setup. If I would have planned for bottom metal from the start, like I should have, I probably would have opted for M5 inletting. Of course I could have inletted the stock for M5 DBM, but I didnt feel like pissing around with it when they make DBMs for BDL.

Ya the HS isn't easy either. When your fingers are cold, it's really hard to release. I don't always sling my rifles with a mag in the gun. Especially on rifles that have the long latch release. I have a short Velcro strap that fits around the mag, stock and barrel that keeps the mag in the rifle in case the latch is bumped. I've had a mag drop just shooting off a bench from recoil when it bumped that latch.

I am with 284winner...I would have a couple that could use this modification if you were inclined to do so.
