my new 20 vartarg

just had dan dowling build me a new 20 vt sako A1 action krieger barrel 24" mcmillon stock fire forming loads shoot under 1/2 inch going back out later to see how the once fired brass shoots so far i love this cartridge.

Having a cooper 20 vartarg I think you will love this little cartridge. Dan has built four rifles for me over the years and theres none better then he is. dave

I didn't notice a big improvement in group size between virgin brass and fire formed brass.

I run 32 grain bullets and use H4198. 18 grains shoots about half the size of groups as 18.5 grains for me.

Assuming Hornady is still making them, the Z-max bullets shoot as good as the twice as expensive Sierra and Nosler plastic tip bullets, again at least for me. Only place I have found the Z-max in stock lately though has been Cabelas.

Just got 100 Berger 35 grain hollow points, I think they are labeled varmint bullets, and I have heard these are some of the most accurate 20 caliber bullets available. Can't wait to try them.

I know all guns are different in that what works in one won't in another. In my cooper 38 both the 32's and 39's shot better the faster I pushed them. With H-4198 I was at 18.8 gr with the 32's and 18 gr with the 39's both sub .5 moa but my best group was with 35 gr Berger hp's with 5 shots in .17" at 110 yds. Gotta love the VarTarg.

Yep, make sure you try H-4198 and the 32gr. bullets. Somewhere between 18gr. and 18.8gr. In my experience loading for 5 different Vartargs, this powder has won out every time! I have had the best luck with the blitzkings and Varmageddons by Nosler.

Tony.

I used H322 in mine with 32 gr V-Max for a long time. Then I tried 18.5 RL7 and same bullet - this is the ticket in my CZ. Now have some AA2200 to try. H4198 would give good groups at times - but seemed more temperature sensitive in my gun that H322 or RL7.

Mine seemed to shoot the best in the 18.6-19.0 grain range with Nosler 32gr Ballistic Tip [boat-tail] bullet with both RL7 and H4198. I ended up with H4198 because of availability. Almost identical in group size and velocity was Reloder 7 the problem is is trying to find that powder.

HTH,

which stock did pick and the contour. (pic's wood be cool) Thinking about going the same way with my 222 when the barrel go's south

20 vartatrg
18.6gr of h4198
32gr varmageddon
tc encore
.2" at 100yds(3 shots)

H4198 and 32gr VMax seem to be the ticket out of my .20VT.
Built on a Model 7 action with a Rock Creek 1:12 twist by Bob Green.
Shot the best with I think 18.6gr and around 3650 FPS.
Lethal on PDs.
