My muffs won’t let me get on the scope

Actually, I’ve had this problem for years. I always used the tallest rings I could get, which worked at the time. I have a new rifle that won’t fit in my Airglide with the tall rings. So I lowered the scope and created the old problem. I’ve been using Walker Razors, which were the most compact muffs I could find. If I only shot with other RF shooters I wouldn’t have a problem since I have custom plugs, but I have to shoot with whatever shows up next to me. Anyone with the same problem and how have you solved it?

I’m not familiar with ear muffs but I use Sordin Supremes without a problem

Don't have that problem with my BR, low stock height and high rings but with anything
that has a cheek riser, I'll use these.

When I had this problem with Walker RAZR muff on two different chassis that I use for long range, I was able to solve this by adjusting my cheekrest forward all the way. These are Magpul Pro 700 chassis, one in SA and one LR. If your cheekrest doesn’t adjust in that direction and if you can adjust your LOP longer, that will move your cheek further back too. Good luck.

Thanks, but my cheek rest is not adjustable fore and aft. Actually, I removed it and still had the problem. I’m going to try moving the scope forward some and see if that helps.

I use the Surefire ear plugs and they’re great.

Harrells offset rings helped me keep my muffs off the stock.

My rifle sits a little higher, also I sit behind the rifle rather than along side.

Seems to help.

Just a note on in ear only protection, my audiologist who is a shooter, said in ear only is not sufficient to prevent hearing loss. Take it for what it’s worth.

Why I use ear plugs. I had the same problem. Muffs always hit the stock and get in the way of proper cheek weld/eye alignment.

Howard leight maxx ear plugs... Buy them off Amazon by the case... Best ear plugs I have ever used and when they are done toss um and open a new pair.... I only use electronic muffs for pistol when I have to talk and listen... Absolutely hate muffs for rifle and shotgun...

As I said, I will not use just ear plugs. What hearing I have left is too important. JMO

Well, according to my last audiologist visit which was just 2 weeks ago, I still have the hearing of a 10 year old Wisconsin farm kid who's never been exposed to any loud noises in their life, and of which is the basis that hearing tests are still founded on today. Needless to say, I can still hear the sound of silence.

Now with that said, I couldn't tell you how many times I've shot rifles (most with brakes the last 20 years) pistols and shotguns without any type of protection over the years, mainly hunting, or just forgetting muffs/plugs target shooting and putting empty cases in my ears. I've also only used ear plugs for target shooting the last 20 years or so. I never wear any hearing protection while hunting still to this day, and all my rifles have brakes, besides the 22 RF and 22 centerfires.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I haven't damaged my ears one bit in over 35 years of a lot shooting. You might need to find a new audiologist, I think he might be full of it.

I’m happy for you, but you haven’t changed my mind. I’m 80 and have lost some hearing. As I said, I think I have my solution, and it’s not ear plugs.

I'm sure I'll have some loss by the time I'm 80.

If only my eyes were still as good as my hearing. They've been declining slowly over the last 10 years I can definitely tell, and so can the vision tests. I have a hard time seeing small numbers/letters, goes in and out of focus and being blurry at times, especially while looking through optics during extended periods. It's a good thing I retrained myself in my early teens to shoot with both eyes open, since I'm right handed and left eye dominant.

Because of profound hearing loss and the extensive use of muzzle brakes at both clubs where I shoot, I wear both plugs and muffs.

The Walker Low Profile work fine for me, no interference with the stock. Combined with plugs, they provide an effective level of protection.
