My most remembered hunting trip..

Prairie Dogs in Wyoming,
When I got to Thunder Basin near Douglas, a 24 hour drive
It was a big change from Pine trees and Oaks
The whole landscape looked like a nicely manicured Golf course
Smooth and flat For Miles and Miles
It was my first real initiation at making extreme long range kills
But you got to repeatedly all day long, changing to different ranges at will.
There were so many all over the place from 50 yds to as far as you could see
We made many kills from 800 yds out to a mile.
The mosquites though, my gosh, I had to apply Deet Every 20 minutes
Sleep with Dryer sheets under my hat
I woke up once and realized I forgot to put some on my ear and my ear was numb
-------------------
I had a Modified YZ 490 I brought in the back of the truck
That basin was the only place I ever got to really open it up and let that bike rev out
The landscape passed by in a blur
The dirt road was nicely graveled with fine pea gravel, or fine lava rock of some sort
Smooth riding, That was a nice trip

Second sheep hunt. My tent mate had every "Cabela's Toy" in the world plus his own satellite phone. Me and the guides sat in awe, wonder, and quiet bemusement as he hauled out all his cool stuff.I had my plain Remington 700 wth a Leupold VX111 1.5-6x scope. He had a wondrous custom rifle in a calibre I'd never heard of with custom handloads, a fancy range finding scope, again a brand I'd never heard of. His goal, a dark caped, full curl with lamb tips Stone's ram. Me, I wanted a legal ram, 8yrs or more old.
I shot a heavily broomed 10 yr old ram. He was bedded, I lay on a big rock, rested rifle on pack, my guide says hold about a foot high he's 420yds or so away. One of my best shots. He keeled over. The 9 younger rams he was with milled around then trotted off over the ridge. Being followed down the mountain by a grizzly spiced things up a bit.Riding back to camp in the dark, catching glimpses of your ram's head in your guides pack is a very, very special kind of happy. My tent mate thought I should be angry because the guide had me shoot a broomed ram.
Next day I shot a nice 6x6 elk off the mountain above camp, another long shot. I got lucky and took out part of his heart and he pumped himself empty. Best elk meat I've ever had.
Three days later went goat hunting. After a long climb sat down for lunch. Finished our sandwiches, my guide got got up (I moved alot slower), sat down immediately and said something with a bunch of 4 letter words . There above us was a large billy sitting on a ledge. Two shots and down he tumbled. Largest billy taken that year by the outfitter that year.
Packing out from the goat spike camp we spotted a large moose. I said nope, no more freezer space and I couldn't afford another trophy fee.

Now that was a hunt!

(My tent mate hunted several days beyond his alotted time and finally got a ram, light colored and no lamb tips. He later wrote me a nice letter telling me I helped him learn to be happy with any legal ram.)

Thanks for listenng, a nice memory for this old coot. Cheers!
