My first paying BR Build

I posted this in another thread but wanted to post it again here. The odds of this happening have to be phenomenal. Lucky me!

I just bought a couple of guns from a friend that was really an unbelievable deal..or situation. One was literally the first BR rifle I ever built for a customer and the guy had never fired it without me in 20 years! It still has less than 200 rounds fired on it! It's a Rem XP-100 with a Kreiger barrel in an old style McMillan stock and has a Jewell trigger.

Being my first ever customer build, ie paying job on a BR rifle, I am going over it a bit and just finished touching up the inner lug abutments and receiver face, mostly just checking my work. It wasn't bad! There are some things that I do want to improve, though. The bedding doesn't look the best and I need to re time the primary extraction/bolt handle. I still remember the day I put the handle on it....It moved a bit in the fixture. I've done a few since then but Dan gets most of them, still. Lol!

I'll check the chamber work in a few days on it but it looks good with a bore scope. Bottom line...there are times when re-working a factory action does make sense.. and to me...this is one of them.

What are the odds of this happening? My first build, still unfired since I fired the gun 20 years ago.

He thought he'd get into shooting and just never did. He called a couple of days ago wanting to sell a few guns...He has some really good stuff, BTW, and this was one of them. I had no idea that he'd never fired it and I gave up a long time ago, trying to get him to bring it to a match.

Another issue with it is that he put the gun in a gun case right after he picked it up. I had just cleared it and told him specifically not to do that. He thought it felt cured, put it in a case in spite of what I said...and something came up on his way home, and he forgot about it. Needless to say, the finish looks like crap. I plan to sand it and re-clear soon.

I'm gonna resurrect my first paying BR build and plan to shoot it soon in UBR Modified class.

Anyway...I thought this was a cool story and wanted to share it here. Yes, there are very good times to true up a factory action.:D:):D

Yesterday was a good but expensive day. The other gun I bought from him is one I've tried to buy from him for several years...A Cooper model 22 in a Christensen Arms stock and with Christensen barrel. It's a 7-08 and shoots like a br rifle. I hear mixed reviews on these barrels but this one stacks bullets in a hole, with the right load. I had planned to keep it but probably spent more than I should've and may let it go. I bought it because of its weight and how well I knew it shoots. It shoots hunting weight bullets very well but with h380 and 110 Speer TNT's....Just WOW!

I may help him sell a few guns on here. He's got some very nice stuff.

Mike, congrats on getting it back! Sounds kinda like getting your 1st girlfriend back. Not quite as pretty remembered her, but 1st just the same! Would be cool to see some pics as you go.

Thanks Keith! I can't argue with that at all and yes, I'll try to get some pics up when it's back together. It's all apart right now. He had the xp to build on and I'm gonna get the stock and barrel that cam on it. Last I knew, it was like new. It was a 7BR XP. I'm hoping he finds all of the pieces to it.

photos...before and after!!
Ok. Not much for pics but heres a before shot. Not much to say except while it wasn't bad, it'll be lots better after going all through it. I was a little ashamed but hey...it was my very first and it shot well. It'll be "improved" and will get a tuner. I like the stock colors...dark blue and black swirl. Should look real nice when done...probably a month from now.

Good deal Mike. I wish I could get my 1st car that I ever owned back. Sold it for $7500.00 on April fools day in 84, (how appropriate) and it worth about 200K now. Another bone headed move on my part.
