My First Attempt At 6 mm PPC

Nick Caprinolo

Gold $$ Contributor
On Thursday of last week, I purchased a new to me, 6 MM PPC with a 45 power Leupold scope. I loaded 25 bullets using brass I got with the rifle. Had the wrong powder and the wrong bullets, but guessed as to powder weight. I haven't measured the groups yet but I am happy with the results. First time using a 2oz trigger and I threw the last shot, top right. 100 yard three shot groups. 7 31 18 target 2.jpg

Looking good!! Aren't 6PPC's wonderful!? You'll do just fine. Keep up the good work....your learning!! If you're not using wind flags, they should be next. Good luck. Dan

Did not have the recommended powder or bullets. Used Varget 28.2 gr and Berger 69 gr bullet. Have VV133 and Berger 68 gr coming next week. Don't know if it will make much difference but I have to try.

VV133/Berger 68's is a workable combination. Small adjustments will get you there. There's a lot of valuable information floating around.
Just pay attention....stick to the fundamentals. Do what works for you.
Tony Boyer's book "The Book of Rifle Accuracy" explains a lot,but doesn't tell you everything.
Good luck......Dan

If you did that with Varget, I think you're in for a pleasant surprise when you find the charge and seating depth for n133. Look at lt32 also.

YEAHHH BAYBIEEEE!!!

It's like a big bright light came on eh!

"Where did all them fliers go? OOhhhh, there's one...oops, I can fix that..."

Und't thee sun shines, und't thee birdies sing und't thee flutterbys dance in the breezes and all is right with the world..... see, you CAN shoot!

BTW Nick......two things you get to learn now.

#1, use circles to aim at, not diamonds nor lines nor boxes nor liddle teeny puddy tats.....CIRCLES!!

And #2, NEVER shoot your own crosshairs out, it's hard on the crosshairs and will double your group sizes. Them days of being "sighted in" are OVER! (but you'll be able to shoot open a beer bottle at a hunner't yrds and not spill a drop....)

And a nuther thing... when you start shooting REAL groups, like 5 shot groups.... and you've got 4 bullets into a liddle round BUG, and alla'sudden the wind goes fish-on-the-griddle..... if'n your respiration don't pick up just a wee hair like ya' care, YA GOT NO SOUL!

Have Fun Man,

welcome

Not sure what you mean by, "don't shoot your crosshairs out."?

You never aim at your crosshairs, in other words you NEVER want bullets near your aiming point...... just oblique ways of saying you NEVER want to hit where your crosshairs are, it just buggers up your aiming point.

To shoot groups in the ones it's nice to see HAIRS in the paper, and aim at them, but never hit your aiming point.

Gotcha, I never shoot like that. Just wasn't sure what you meant.
Thanks for the reply.

Now not shooting your cross hairs out makes a lot of sense. I will set the scope to rise a bit and to the right. I will always see the aim point that way. Thanks for that tip. As for the targets, I took several downloaded targets, put them in Photoshop and printed these on photo paper. What I liked about the diamonds is you line your crosshairs on them easily. I will make us some with circles and give them a try. What kind of targets do they use in matches? Anyone have a photo of one?

Not sure why you would set the aim point to the right. That will only help confuse the wind issue.
Just go straight up or straight down, that way you help keep the wind issue out of the equation.
