My first 6BR

New to the forum. I must say I love my recent build for my first 6br. I am addicted to it. It has a 25" match grade 14twist barrel on a trued Rem 700. I pillar bedded the Remington wood stock myself. I found a load it likes and built it as a plinker and hopefully a varmint rifle. I am using Lapua Brass, Nosler 70grain BT, 30.4grains of Benchmark, and wolf small magnum primers. It shoots in the .2's around 3240fps with bipod and rear bag. It is a mild load but shot so well and should be able to reload many times with it, so I am off and running. I was limited on primer selection but have no complaints with the Wolfs so far.

I wanted to say hello and wish I built one a long time ago. Anyone have any field experience with the 70grain Nosler BT's?

Thanks

Glad you like that br. They are a sweet heart of a caliber.

I have been using 70gr NBT's every since they came out. Great bullet for chucks, coyotes, Pdogs, and a few other critters. There might be some better bullets....... but IMHO they are among the best. WD

Used them on Wyoming PD last week, very accurate and DEVASTATING. Photos are to graphic to post. You will love that 6 BR, very versatile, but with a 14 twist you are limited to bullets, I Know that, as I have a 14 twist but also have others with a faster twist and love them all for accuracy and mild recoil. My 14 twist will not stabilize Berger 69 gr, but no problem with others, to 70 gr. Enjoy...

Big Boo: " should be able to reload many times with it". Yes, that's another big advantage: brass will last a very long time. Lapua for my 8 twists have 45+ reloads on them, primer pockets still tight as when new, and I've never thrown one away because of split necks, case head seperation, etc. etc.

Long life expectancy off-sets the initial cost of around .84 each, so over time, it's a better deal than a lot of other cartridges. Extreme accuracy, mild recoil, long barrel life, what's not to like?

Well, I think my 3x9x40 Leupold with no adjustable paralex is not cutting the mustard on the br. I shot a 1.5" group at 400 yards during validating and then at 500 and 600 yards my groups opened up terribly, like moa. I am wondering if it is because I have no paralex adjustment and 9 power? It does have a cds dial but I feel not equipped. What do you think? Any suggestions to get out to 600-700 yards on a budget?

Weaver 36. Sightron 36 all reasonably priced. I've seen them on here around
300 and up . There's been a few Leopold 36 on here also.

Welcome to the 6br koolaid.
This first one probably won't be the last. My first one was a 12 twist then came an 8 twist. I really like them both.

I use a Weaver T36 and a Sightron, they are both excellent scopes. A buddy has a NF and neither of us can tell much of a difference, if any. He's building a new rifle and is going with a Sightron this time.

Big Boo,

The 36 Weaver and Sightron are great scopes, they are great for targets , but suck for hunting, no field of view. The 24X of the same work better. I like the Weaver or the Sightron 6 x 24 for the low end cost then to the Sightron SIII for a little more cost.

True enough, a high magnification fixed power scope isn't ideal for a walking around deer rifle.

Re the Nosler 70gr, I used to shoot them out of a 243, awesome on anything from a prairie dog to a pronghorn. You're obviously running a little less velocity but should still be an impressive performer.

Keep us posted, sounds like you've put together a great rifle. Couple of pics never hurt anything...

Well, for my price point and hunting in mind, I ordered a Vortex Viper 6.5-20-50 PA. It had a good amount of bells and whistles for my price range at the moment. I hope to have it here in a week. I couldn't justify a fixed 36x etc when I want to hunt.

my name is lpreddick and i'm and addict...to the 6mm br. got tired of working to get some guns to shoot small groups. so i got my first 6mm br, 14 twist and am more impressed than i was with the first 22 br. this 6mmbr will one hole with just about any bullet i feed it...64 berger column, 65 vmax, 66 precision ballistics, 65 berger, 68 bergers, 68cheeks 70 bergers and 70 nbts ! n133 and benchmark gets the one hole with 3200+ fps, but if you can get some 8208 XBR you can get the one hole at 3400+ fps...a higher accuracy node. this thing is spoiling me.

For bullets in the 68g - 70g range you might want to try some H 4895. Is is one of best powders for the 6 MM BR for billets in that range. I shoot two 1-12 and two 1-14 twist BR's. The H 4895 also worked great in the 1-12 with bullets up to 75 g. Charges from 30.2 up to 31.9 seem to work for me, but you need to start low and work up, always checking for pressure signs.

Well, I have been hooked. I shot a 1" 3 shot group at 500 yards the other day with the 70 grain BT's. I have been happy so far with the 6-20 Vortex Viper scope for the money. It is a ton of fun and may have my most accurate rifle yet.
