My finally finished 220 Russian

This project started at least 25 years ago. Some of the older people will remember John Bunch. He was my first shooting mentor. John said I needed a 7.62X39 Mini Mauser barreled action. I always did what John suggested. I took a terribly inletted Richards Micro Fit stock and installed it. Next on the agenda was a new barrel. John had a 270X39 Ackley reamer. I now had a, for lack of better term, 270PPC. It was incredibly accurate and an excellent young persons deer rifle. I traded it to Jay Lynn Gore's Son in Law for a set of Michelin tires for my Duramax. 3 years later I got it back as I always liked it. After visiting with Gene Beggs I decided to do a complete make over in 220 Beggs(Russian). I sent the receiver to Karl Feldkamp to machine the stripper clip notch and other mod 98 cuts on it. Just cosmetics only. Kerry Stottlemyer did the bolt handle and made the scope bases and rings. I sent my reamer to Mike Bryant to chamber it in a no turn 220 Beggs. My lathe will not cut the metric tenon threads. James Anderson supplied the bottom metal. It has a PT&G 3 pos safety. I have bought many sticks of walnut from Roger Vardy in Australia. Roger picked out the wood and sent it to Dean Zollinger to carve it for me. Gene and a couple forum members suggested that I start with 25.5-26 Grains of LT 32. It is a 14 twist Shilen. Supposed to be around 3550-3600 FPS. I have several thousand Cheek, Barts, Berger, and other 52 grain bullets. It will be my walk around(stalking) rifle for killing Tin Cans. I will probably install one of the 3X9 Zeiss scopes that I have.

I gave the old stock and almost new barrel, with brass to James Anderson. He had a Mini that he was building for his Son.

I hope you like it, but I don't know when I will take it to the range.

Outstanding walnut. You have very nice taste in how you want the rifle finished.

Classy looking rig for sure. That is one 'bitchin' piece of wood and stock shape, checkering and finish bring it all together to make it one of those "oh my" moments when you first lay eyes on it!

Oh, and Butch, Joe R from FL says hello!

+1 on everything said here. A fine rifle that show's your good taste and also quality contacts! (In my opinion of course :) )

That may very well be the finest wood grain I have ever seen! AWESOME!! You should feel very fortunate to have a piece of wood that gorgeous!

WOW!!! Very nice stock. Great story. You should write it down and keep it with the gun.

Butch, Just a beautiful rifle! You have shown some others on here and I must commend you on great taste in rifle artwork.

Guess what! I've never fired it yet. A forum member from Louisiana stopped by yesterday and were looking at some of my rifles and I thought why have I not shot it. Hopefully this year.
