My favorite 45 acp…

Since I was young I’ve had this attraction to the 45 acp, mostly as a 1911 enthusiast. I enjoy casting bullets and reloading so it’s a fun and versatile cartridge. Lately, I ventured into the stage of life where optics are really enjoyable for me to use.

It’s pretty awesome to see what’s available now to us shooters! A couple Winters ago I built a couple large frame Lone Wolfs and am really enjoying them. They can shoot Plus P and 45 Super as well!

I just got a Springfield Armory Operator AOS for Christmas so will add that once I get the Holosun installed. Can’t wait to shoot it!

I shot and loved custom 1911s for many years.

Several years ago, a friend offered to trade an HK USP in 45 for a custom Sprinfield Armory compact. I told him that I didn't much care for 'plastic' guns.

He said, 'here, shoot a few rounds'. All that I can say is WOW. I was hooked. Tthat was a bone stock factory pistol that pointed and shot as well as my $2000 customs. I was floored. And yes, I traded the Springfield compact for the full size USP :).

Later I bought the USP Compact, HK45, and HK45C. All of them shot like lasers. I swapped a threaded barrel onto the HK45C so I could run it suppressed. It's now my favorite 45ACP. I've since traded the others off and I still like the way a 1911 points and shoots but the HK45C is not for sale.

Shot the old school Colts when in the Army .
1911's just did not fit my hand well so most of my pistol shooting involved revolvers or Contenders.
That changed recently when I inherited a SIG 220 in 45 ACP.
I like it .

I got one of Smith & Wesson's first model 1911s, all stainless. This, I learned, was actually crafted by the S&W Custom Shop, but not initially advertised as such. Mine had polymer grips. Here is the current version with wood grips.

My gosh... so impressive. Great trigger -- precise, light, required no tuning/modification whatsoever.

And the accuracy. My friends at the range were stunned. One guy had a custom 1911 he paid $2600 for. My Smith & Wesson outshot it easily

Using Vihtavuori N320 and poly-coated SWC bullets, this pistol could put 5 rounds inside 1.5" at 10 yards offhand. See target shot with my S&W 5" barrel 1911:

After trying numerous powders, I found VV N320 delivered the best combination of accuracy, easy metering, consistency, clean burning qualities, and low muzzle flash. My gun has proven exceptionally accurate using N320 with bullets from 180 grains to 230 grains — it will shoot as accurately as some expensive customs I’ve tried.

NOTE: The bullet hole edges are sharp because I was using coated semi-wad-cutters, and the target paper was thick. Rounds were loaded with Vihtavuori N320 and 200-grain SWCs from Precision Bullets in Texas (unfortunately no longer sold). These coated projectiles were accurate and they reduced fouling in my pistol barrels.

Jerry Miculek actually had a very cool .45 ACP S&W Model 625 revolver that was very accurate and he set a world record, shooting 12 rounds (including reload) in . No that's not a typo. Watch here:

Miculek's .45 ACP wheelgun used full moon clips to allow easy loading and unloading with standard .45 ACP brass:

Smith & Wesson sold a .45 ACP revolver as a Model 625. Here's the 1988 version:

And here is a newer, Performance Center Special Edition with ported barrel:
