My 284 win by Straight Shot Gunsmithing

Hey guys i got my gun back from the smith on tuesday and i got the stock inletted and was able to mount the scope. Not much to look at because i dont have an aftermarket stock yet. Specs are:

Gunsmith: Nate from Straight Shot Gunsmithing
Action: Savage 116 Weather Warrior FCSS
Barrel: Bartlein 1:8 twist SS 5R #3 contour finished at 26"
Muzzle Brake: Center Shot Rifles Mini Magnum Muscle Brake
Trigger: Factory accutrigger that i reworked and polished to get rid of the small amount of creep.
Stock: Factory Weather Warrior Stock that i inletted for the #3 barrel.
Scope: Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 SFP EBR 1-MOA reticle.
Caliber: 284 WIN with about .270 freebore and a .317 neck.

I planned to go shooting on Friday to brake it in but i snapped my cleaning rod and the news ones didnt come in time. I will update this thread with groups, and all the other fun stuff as it happens.

Take care, Riley

Sweet gun man!!! It looks like a shooter. What am I saying its a savage of course it's a shooter. That brake makes it look mean! In a really nice way lol

The weather was finally decent enough to go shooting, 75 degrees infact (and yes i did get sunburned ). I did the shoot and clean 10 times and i wasnt making a whole lot of progress on the cleaning. I then did shoot 5 and clean (3 times) and it really started to improve in cleaning time, then 15 shots and clean (twice) and it was cleaning up pretty good. Four, 3 minute soaks with Bore tech CU+2 and she was clean by the end. I used a mild load of 50 grains of H4350 (please dont come and steal any , and i should hit pressure around 54 grain FYI ) with the 162 grain amaxs that i threw together and it was shooting about .75 moa with the 5 shot groups and about 1.75 MOA groups with the 15 shot groups from a shaky bench , being fatigued from being in the sun all day, and 10-20 mph wind. The loads were running about 2730 fps the first few shots then the wind picked up to about 20 mph and knocked the chrony over.... twice, then i was able to get it stand and not fall over (i told it to stay there in a soft soothing voice ) and it went to about 2670 fps average at the last 15 rounds.

I did some powder charge testing yesterday, i tested 52-54.8 grains of H4350 in .2 increments, i hit pressure at 53 grains so i stopped there. The mirage and wind were bad, the wind was gusting from 10-20 and with the mirage i could barely make out the center of the target, my best group was at 52.2 grains and IIRC (dont have the notes infront of me) about 2780 fps and about .5 MOA accuracy, if the wind and mirage werent so bad i think i would have done a bit better.

I went shooting again today, the mirage was much better and wind was a lot calmer and was a headwind. I used 52.2 grains of H4350 and testing seating depths. I tested .020" jam, .010" jam, .000", .010" jump, .020" jump, and .030" jump, i tested five rounds of each except for the .020" jam, that one had three. Results were not good, i am thinking of trying a primer change? I am using fed 215 match right now, i have some winchester standard and magnum primers that i can try. I feel very confident that i can shoot at least .5 MOA at this range. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I guess I haven't tried H4350 yet but I think you should be getting higher velocities than that at max pressure. I've noticed with the 2 powders I've tried so far with 162 amax that they like to be around 2950fps. At least in my gun. I've tried rl17 and hybrid 100v. I got over 3000fps with both in my 27" barrel at max.

A primer change could make a big difference. What range were you shooting at. I know you had work done by straight shot so should be good to go but don't rule out bedding and definitely play with your action torque. Also make sure that barrel is floated. Mine was before bedding but didn't have much clearance. After bedding there was a tiny spot that was touching on one side.

This was at 100 yards, i am going to see if i can borrow an action wrench next weekend and do some testing, i inlet the stock and there is PLENTY of room from the barrel.... i got a little carried away haha.

NICE GUN Riley , is the tang free floated ? Action screws torqued ? No bedding compounds touching the sides or bottom of the recoil lug ? Try shooting it off a rest instead of a bipod once . By looking at the pics It seems your still not quite in the node yet , Make some more changes , that thing should be a hammer.

Tang is free floated (i called my gunsmith this morning and he suggested i check it), i havent bedded the rifle, i will see if i can borrow a torque wrench this weekend. I will try a WLR and WLRM primer next weekend also ( i am using fed215gm right now). I will try shooting from the bench next time.

My load and my soninlaws load are both 52grs of H4350 with the 162AMAXs. They are both deadly accurate. We have both shot up to 54grs with out any pressure signs. Hope this helps!!

It does! How far off the lands?

Order of pics:
3 shot groups were shot on saturday, ( the first three pictures) the jump length and primer are written on the bottom.

5 shot groups were shot today, i took the three loads above and shot five shot groups today (jump and primer also written on the bottom), NOTE: the last group i didnt allow much time to cool so this may or may not be the reason for the split groups? And shot #3 i called a pull right (reticle was about 1/2" right of center when shot broke)
