My .20 Plain Jane Build

I'd call this a "budget build", but when ya order one of these new barrels with a custom chamber and a Remage nut, stainless, match grade, shipped -- ya better start out with a pretty good budget. Aside from that I worked with a pretty low budget.

Donor action was from my old 700 ADL, that I've had since the seventies. It was .222 Rem, and has served me well, but the barrel is getting pretty gnarly and I thought the perfect conversion would be 20-222. Ordered the barrel from PacNor in 11 twist, three groove, lopped at 24 inches. Got the #6 sporter contour, and I love it.

The barrel is beefy enough for weight and heat control without being too crazy in the weight department. Added bonus was that it was an almost perfect fit in the 40X rimfire stock that I ordered for this job. I had to open about 6" of the forend, and a little at the nut region, and it was done. My free-float is perfect.

Now that stock is where we can talk "low budget". I got it from Numrich, for 53 US dollars, and feel like I hit the lottery. It was in perfectly usable shape when it arrived, and I almost used it like that. I realized that I'd never have a better time to pretty it up though, and went ahead and did a basic sand and oil on it. It's not fancy, but it is beautiful in it's own way. Simple, straight grain, tough, and beefy. The inletting fits this action so well, that I haven't done any special bedding or pillars --- yet. We'll see how she shoots first.

I think I'll go ahead and pick up the proper rail for this gapping hole since they are available, and I could actually use it.

I did go ahead and order the proper bottom metal for this stock, and glad I did. Made life a lot easier that making my own, and wasn't all that much. All said and done, I've had great luck with Numrich, and will try to use them anytime I can. Their shipping is very reasonable, and it's easy to talk to a genuine human being who speaks "murican".

I've got taller rings coming for it to accomidate the Scope I'm gonna use -- for now. There's a few little things to take care of yet, and one big one. I didn't open up a mag-well in the stock, and am going to be single feeding it for awhile. For now I made a little feed ramp from a piece of bamboo flooring, which is perfectly Okie, and perfectly fine.:p

Now I've got to slap together some starter loads and go season the barrel as per PacNor's directions. Our mutual friend, snert, helped me get together the die and bushings to size brass the way I'll need, and I think he nailed it. If it all goes bad though, I'll have him to blame.:p I also appreciate the snippets of info that I've got from many of ya here from previous posts and PM's. It's gonna be damned embarrassing if I can't make this thing shoot. Thanks for looking. jd

sweet stuff JD. If you need that short forarm piece, I might know a guy who may have one. One thing to note...the original short rail has a toothy bottom, so it grabs the bags. I use one, but I have to be careful not to let it ride the bag or it mucks up the recoil slide. My long 40XB has a nice fitted piece of alum stock. It rides bags well.

Very pretty stock and the nut doesn't look too bad (some of the shorter nuts look funky to my eye). nice job on teh stock.

oh, and if it doesnt shoot, it is not the dies....

Very nice build..Let us know how it shoots..
I like the classic look mixed with that polished barrel ..
That looks like the perfect combination to me
Well done.

The icing on the cake will be those tiny ragged itty bitty groups....
That is indeed my hope. The bullets I've got to get started with are Nosler 32 gr. ballistic tip BT's. No particular reason for them except our little gun store had them and I've got credit there. I assume I'll end up using Hornady V-Max unless this barrel is weird or something.

Since this chamber has a long .235 neck in it, I'm thinking of trying a short .235 shoulder below the neck that measures .223 with bullet seated. (Winchester Brass) Tell me if that sounds dumb. jd

I'm most impressed with your high end rests! Awesome. Bet it shoots good off those too. (Not being a smart ass either...I will have to make some of those for sage rat hunting.)

My first build was a 17Mach1V,many years ago.I also used a 40-X stock from Numerich Arms with a 700 action. It has served me well for many years and was my go to PD rifle for a long time.I think the reason I've always liked it some much was that I did it for a reasonable price and it is so well balanced,it's fun to shoot. You have chosen a neat cartridge for this project, enjoy.

JDS, looking good! Like Eddie said give 8208xbr a run. I run it and 35 Bergers in mine and its deadly on coyotes out to 325yds. Accurate, quiet and deadly what's not to love

Great pictures! Thanks for lettin us see. I just love those "Pac nuts" for their barrels
as it allows you to put a Pacnor barrel on a rem. 700 action. Yes let us know how it shoots!
