I just made it back to PA from CO on my first Pronghorn hunt. When we arrived on Friday afternoon before the Saturday morning opener our guide invited us out to his ranch to look around a see the hunting grounds. That evening we saw quite a few bucks as well as one sure enough trophy. On Saturday morning we arrived at the ranch at 5:15 am and waited what seemed like an eternity for shooting light. Less than two hours into the mornings hunt I encountered my buck working a doe at about 250 yards. He didn't look very good at first so I chose to let a young fellow in the party that had a doe tag take a shot at the doe. Unfortunately, he missed and both animals ran aother 250 yards in the opposite direction. After watching the buck in the scope for a few minutes I realized that he was a little better than I originally thought and decided to take the shot. Not being used to the flat open land I misjudged the distance and shot it a little low which required a follow up shot after stalking to within 200 yards. The rifle was a Remington 700 VLS in .243 with a Vortex 6.5-24X50 Scope. I was shooting hand loaded Sierra 100 gr Gamekings at a touch over 3000 fps. My hunting buddy tagged out about one hour after me with a great one shot kill from his .308. All in all it was an awesome hunt. We met some great people and had large amounts of fun. We are already planning on heading back out in February to help the Ranchers with some coyote control.
