Is that one of the Leatherwood-Malcomb telescope sights? If not, what is it, and did you have problems mounting it?

I have a 34" HighWall in 45-120 and would love to put a scope on it.

Wow, someone resurrected this one.

I kind of moved this saga over to boards more targeted to this type of shooting.

What I found out about my WIn-Mir highwall is that it has a SAAMI spec chamber, and they have pretty much zero freebore, just he lead angle of the rifling for throat. That is no problem at all shooting smokeless, you are actually better off with a lot of bullet in the case to use up the volume in there because there is no smokeless powder that you can load to 100% fill that doesn't start making it into a 458WinmagLite.

Reloading dies, OMG! The dies on the market grossly over size the brass. It's not just about adjusting the die.

What I found out about shooting cast bullets in a big bore at least, is that you need to limit your velocity under 1400FPS or you are wasting time.

I won't even start to write about my paper patching experiments with smokeless in this rifle. (you can get way down in that rabbit hole)

Casting... If you are shooting cast you need to learn to cast, I've never gotten anything like accurate shooting from a store bought cast bullet.

In the interim I've gotten a C Sharps '74 in 45-70 to shoot cast and black. The Highwall gets loaded with Remington 405 jacketed over 50gr of 3031. I haven't spent that much time shooting either in the last yr bacause I find that shooting these heavy recoilers on a regular basis hurts my form behind my F-TR rifles. You shoot them in a completely different way in order to control the torque of accelerating that big fat pea.

Catshooter, the Malcolm scope is a good scope. Their Unertl type mounts are probably pretty good. The mounts that they sell to ft into the dovetail are complete garbage. Look at it this way, the scope costs a couple of hundred and comes with mounts, if you want to buy the Unertl copys they cost $400, 2X what the scope and standard mounts cost.

If you get a scope you will need to get blocks that are drill and tap mounted. Everyone shooting BPCRs loves their MVA scopes, but I don't think the scope itself is any better or worse than the Leatherwood. I have read a comment somewhere that the Leatherwood may have better glass. MVAs are made in USA and do give a reticle choice. If I was getting one I'd get the open center mil dot.

I have a straight tube Unertl 6x on my Browning 45-70 highwall, but they are as rare as chicken teeth, so I need something else for my 45-120 E-u-birdie.

I'll look at both of them - thanks.

When I wrote dovetail mounted I meant the dovetail for the barrel sight, which is where the supplied Leatherwood mount goes, I did not mean the dovetail mounting blocks like the kind for a Unertl or an MVA mount.

I have a C Sharps with a single set trigger that is just wonderful.
Also shoot a C. Sharps High Wall with SST in 38-56. 30" barrel. BPCR silhouette and BPTR mid-range are what I shoot more than anything (shot the 4-day SE Regional in GA the last week of Oct to finish the season). Great fun. Casting is pretty easy. Get a PLC, SSR & TC for $65 and you'll have excellent control of the temp of your 20# Lee pot, making your bullets very consistent. The 45-70 is about the easiest and best known of the BPCR rounds to load for. If your trigger is not what you want, talk to Lee Shaver (google) about fixing. He did one for me a few years back and turned it into an excellent, crisp single-stage trigger.

I'm surprised this thread is back as well.

The scope on my Sharps is a MVA. I've watched guys trying to use the Malcom/Leatherwood scopes and they have alot of problems with repeteability.

I shoot iron sights with my BPCR rifles.

In 2012 my wife and I decided to travel to Ridgway PA to shoot competetivly. We attended all the matches that year and this year. My wife started shooting as well, a 40-65 Browning.

Ridgway is a great club. If, you really want to challenge yourself,

A: Come there for the Black powder Shilouette shoots.
B: Bring along a High Power rifle and do it at 1000 yds.
C: After you use your High Power rifle at that range, do it with your BPCR rifle and iron sights. It can be done. And afterwards get together with the other shoots at Gunners in St. Marys for chow. http://www.gunners.biz/

It's a good time. My wife and I are match directors next year so PM me with any questions you may have.
