Muzzle Break

Im in the market for a muzzle break but not too knownledgable on them. I shoot my 25 WSM off a bipod so id like it to help with muzzle jump as well. Anyone have any suggestions of what brand would work the best?

Thanks Hillbilly

For use from I bipod, I'd use a brake without holes on the bottom. Otherwise, I prefer holes all the way around. They just kick up too much dirt if not shooting from a bench. Shrewd makes a good one that won't break the bank.--Mike Ezell

EABCO sells several different brakes. They have a few without any holes on the bottom so as not to kick up dust when fired, and also may help reduce muzzle jump even further.

I like the looks of the JP Howitzer brake. The manufacturer also claims it will nearly eliminate recoil, and since all gas is directed out the sides it won't blow dust up in your face. And it just looks super cool. I would like to try one, and may get one for my current build if funds allow.

Taken from the EABCO site about the JB Howitzer brake: Large, double baffle surface area captures forward moving gases to actually pull the gun forward... nearly canceling out rearward recoil completely. With most cartridges you'll see up to 100% recoil reduction*... Without question, the most effective muzzle brake we've ever seen.

Umm, a significant part of the recoil is the simple momentum effect, ie action and reaction from accelerating a mass. This cannot be eliminated by gas redirection -after- the projectile reaches the end of the barrel...

Suggestions for a muzzle break. Ear plugs and muffs and a bottle of aspirin for the concussion headache after shooting. ;D

ChrisNZ, while no brake can eliminate recoil, it can be significant in reduction of actual felt recoil. And considering it takes a bullet .00083 seconds to exit a 30" barrel if it's traveling at 3000fps, how much can the firearm actually move before the bullet exits the barrel and the gas acts upon the brake? Even taking into consideration the time it takes for the bullet to accelerate, it still leaves in a fraction of a second and allows the gas to push the rifle in the opposite direction counteracting the force of recoil.

Not all brakes simply redirect gas. Some, like the JP brake, are designed so the gas hits a large flat area and the gas actually pushes the rifle away from you.
So just as you stated recoil is caused in part by the reaction to the acceleration of mass contained within the rifle, it is also counteracted by the gas that is expelled acting upon the brake and applying force to the rifle in the opposite direction of recoil. And considering the gas acts upon the brake in a fraction of a second, and it takes time for the force of recoil to overcome the inertia of the rifle, what percentage of the initial recoil can actually take place prior to the gas acting upon the brake and counteracting the rearward acceleration of the rifle?

And are you referring to felt recoil, or calculated recoil based on the force from the acceleration of mass? They are very different and calculated recoil often has no relation on what you feel when firing a rifle.

Just for instance, a round with 30lbs of calculated recoil will have far less felt recoil in a rifle weighing 20 pounds than one weighing 8 pounds.

Not saying your wrong, only that your not seeing the whole picture and took the statement too literally.

Harrells will ship a break for $30.00 and they are as good as anything out there, but they have 360 degree holes. If I'm ever down in the dirt shooting I use a tarp under the barrel...

Kenny-

understand all those issues.

What I take umbrage with is an advertiser claiming the impossible. If they said "our brake eliminates most felt recoil", I can live with that but as for saying in an unqualified manner it cures it -all-, won't wear that.

As 2506 says, the only sure thing with a brake is a huge noise increase and pissing your neighboring shooters off :D

Thanks to everyone for there posts that gives me some ideas and some more sites to look at for a break!

Ill make sure to hit a store up for the aspirin the gun I wanna put the break on it already really loud!

Can ditto the remark about EABCO and they do a nice job of the install, priced fairly, and done correctly. They can match some finishes. Agree with no bottom holes as well when prone but holes blowing down tend to increase muzzle jump, not reduce it. Good luck.

Look up Jim See and his Muscle Brake, I just got one in for my 7WSM pitol build I'll know how it works in a month or so ;) but I've seen them on other BIG pistols and the difference is well pretty amazing! enough that I'll feel safe shooting a rifle scope on the pistol. I think you should be able to do a search on Muscle Brake and should find enough info not to mention Jim is a hell of a nice guy I have found out. Later,

hillbilly simply put your bad body position is causing the jump, your not straight behind the rifle with your shoulders square to the target, I shoot in Tactical/Sniper Matches, I must spot my own shots, when everything is straight and square the recoil will go straight back and holes will magically appear at 100 yards, even with magnum calibers. Now my 308 and 260 match rifles do have Tubb T2k brakes on them, I have them on my rifles for the goofy positions I must shoot in at matches, the Tubb brake not only tame the S out of recoil but are adjustable like a barrel tuner to increase accuracy.

I would opt for the Hollands RADIAL Quick Discharge. Have one on a 7-08 XP-100 Pistol and it is outstanding at reducing the recoil. I use a 6-24 rifle scope on it comfortably. Going to put one on a .308 Win pistol soon.

If you all are looking for a Great Radial Type Brake , get a hold of Ross Schuler...Rem40xb1@msn.com
These Brakes are CNC machined and cost around $40 / $45
I shoot Pistols from 22cal all the way up to a 338 Edge with this Brakes .

+1 on Harrell's. I have had two of them. Does the job just as good as the ones that cost 5 times as much, and they look great too.

The jp enterprise brake looks like a tank brake and it is,however it works real well and is side exiting only.

I like the Vais and Harrell's brakes. I would choose the Vais first because I think it is actually a little quieter. I currently have 3 of the Vais and two Harrell's. The Harrell's is approximately 65% cheaper than the Vais.
So, two points to consider: Maybe a little quieter,,, a lot less cost.
