muzzle brake????

I have recently purchased a new Vanguard in 300 wby mag. It has a muzzle brake on it that is like to know the make of. The local smith told me from the pic that it looks to be a very good one whatever it is. Well built, designed, etc. Its a permanent brake so I'm hoping it is. Just wanting to know what kind of reduction in recoil to expect. Thanks for any replies.

It looks like there is a spacer on there for timing which would suggest it isn't "permanent" and can be unscrewed from the end of the barrel.

Iwill bet about a .308 in regards to recoil. It is a common design and should work quite well.I have never seen one with a cone on the end but that is probably for aesthectics. It looks real nice to me.I wouldnt remove it because it is probably on there pretty good being a factory piece. It may even be loctited.Keep us posted on how she shoots.

Will do. It may be a bit as its in layaway. Sure hope your right . Lots of folks on another site seem to think its nothing more than a flash hider due to angles of the vents. If thats true, ill be replacing it. Its not factory. It was put on after the fact. Ill keep you all posted ASAP

actually directly behind, as in shooting position, is not bad. it is when you move to the side of the rifle..where the ports point , that noise is an issue.

That's your experience; other's are different. My .338 Lapua Mag has a muzzle brake; recoils like an 8.5lb .308 Win with 150gr bullets, but is loud enough to wake the dead from ANY position less than 15 behind the firing line. And especially loud where the shooter sits, and not noticeably different on either side than where the shooter sits. Definitely a plugs and muffs gun unless you are more than 15 feet behind the firing line. My unbraked .338 Win Mag is not even close in the noise department, but it sure recoils a lot more.

I go to the public range up the road early in the day on weekdays, so that I usually have the line to myself....

I can imagine. The 300 wby is a whole new animal from my 30-06. Yet i won't even attempt to class it with your 338 lm. Broke or otherwise, lol

Recoil reduction should be way down. I build a brake similar to this and it should help a lot. If someone is on eather sife they will feal the gasses push outwards thst is what the cone in the front is for to help direct the gasses out. Different design but same thought as most muzzle brakes. Flash hinders for the most part do not have any restrictions in the front. If made properly it will not hurt accuracy. Good luck shooting

Just in case its not what I'm after, has anyone used the Holland's Radical Brake? Thoughts on it for future reference please.

I shoot a lot with a friend that has one. I have tried his gun it does take down the kick but for the noise it isn't worth it to me unless you are shooting something bigger the 338 lapua. By the way when I first started shooting I was very recoil shy and had to have a rubber butt plate put on all my surplus guns that originally had metal butt plates. One year later and I have removed all the rubber and gone back to the metal. Now recoil does not phase me a bit.
