muzzle brake ....

I have always wanted to try one of these recoil reducing muzzle brakes to control the annoying tendency my rifles have to flip when firing ...then I lose the sight picture..& almost never see the hits on varmints..One gun smith told me not to bother as muzzle brakes can adversely effect accuracy...What say ye learned gentlemen about this matter ???...I got to shoot a heavy barrel 22-250 fitted with one last year & out to two hundred yds it was cool seeing the bullet strike the small steel discs...It was not a scientific experiment ..I'm going to fit this to a 243 varmint weight barrel 26 inches long..That way ..I can shoot it bare, fit the brake, compare same load to same load before & after the brake job...If it fails the barrel can be cut & recrowned ...Sound like a plan ??? mike in ct

A buddy of mine has a superb 7mm WSM match-grade rifle built by Rick Freudenberg. He uses it with and without the muzzle brake, depending on what is allowed at different matches. With the brake, that thing is a pussycat to shoot, even with the big 180 grain custom bullets he loads. That thing is accurate too!

I'd be real tempted to put a brake on a dedicated varmint rifle to allow me to see the impact. The guys I know shooting braked rifles have fine accuracy with everything from little .243's up to the big .338 Lapua, .408 Chey Tac and even the .50 BMG.

Is there such thing as a quiet brake??

Like a brake with just a couple of holes. doesn't perform as well as the full on oes but gives a goodly amount of muzzle control WITHOUT THE NOISE

Thanks

norcalmike being caught with one of those if you have a firearms permit over here is 7 years jail and 15 year ban from owning any firearms at all. The crims get caught with them all the time and nothing happens to them.

You can own and use one for commercial purposes with an armoureres permit. but getting an AP is harder than finding a politician that doesn't lie.

Back on topic::::
I was looking at the ports on a marlin lever gun and thinking what would a small call be like with just 1 or 2 rows of ports in the barrel.
It wouldn't let much gass out so the noise wouln't be too load but it also wouldn't excert much force on the barrel but it would be excerting the force it does have in the right place to help hold the muzzle down.

Looking at it like this for a couple of holes you pick up 5% less muzzle jump and 5% increased noise-- not worth it.
If on the other hand you picked up 10% less muzzle jump and only 3% more noise. IMHO it's worth considering- what do you guys think.
EDM cutting a couple of small holes in the barrel cannot be too hard can it??

OGRE,
Check out magnaport. They do exactly what you mentioned. They don't add a muzzle brake onto the barrel end instead make edm cuts in the barrel.

MAB Engineering magnaported a 308 hunter with a short 20" barrel for me it cut the recoil dramaticaly took the sharp whack out but it is a bit noisier and will not give the recoil reduction of a quality made brake. The more gas you can divert the better the recoil reduction. If you want to leave the barrel profile alone and reduce the recoil a bit to a tolarable level the MagnaPort is a good option. ,Just dont sit in your ute in the drivers seat with the pasengers window down and fire the rifle out the pasenger window with the muzzle of the 20" ported barrel inside the cab at a fellow deer 200 yards away your ears ring for a week oh yes it tasted verry nice. And i was parked at the time just the details on where it was and weather i was supposed to be doing it i cant remember :D)

Cheers Bill

I wonder what just getting the top cuts made in the barrel by magna port would do.

I 'm looking at ways of trying to keep the 223 in target more/ quicker recoil recovery when out popping "long legged hopping things"

fitting a hb and a flatter forend stock would prolly be better $$ spent that stuffing around with a muzzle brake.

thanks

Check the above link for VAIS Muzzle Brakes. In my opinion these are the best on the market. ,of course I haven't been able to try them all). The SG&Y 11 degree brake worked well on my 30-378Wby Mag. I have recently purchased 2 more VAIS brakes for 2 BR guns in the building stages.

Hi Mike,

I have been using a brake from the folks at Answer Products, out of Troy, MI. and I love it. I have it on my .22-250AI and it is like shooting a noisy .22LR. The best group that I have fired was a five shot group that went .172" at 100 yards. It is an average 1/4" @ 100 yards, from the bench, as long as I hold up my end. Needless to say, the woodchucks, crows, and PD's, do not appreciate this accuracy very much.

I have never seen a properly installed muzzle brake ever affect the accuracy of a rifle.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine

I use muzzle breaks on guns that don't really need them just because they allow you to see hits as far away as you can shoot. In a few cases the rifles shot better with a break installed on them than without, and have never heard of one causing a gun to loose it's accuracy because of installing one of them.
The Mag-na-porting will not reduce the recoil as much as a screw on brake will, but they tend to be a little easier on the ears.........
