Muzzle Brake Recoil Test Results

Its a nice cross section he tested but I think his data collecting is odd. I have shot rifles with all kinds of brakes and one of the best I felt was a simple one made by sid Goodling and some of my home made brakes worked quite well. Also , who does he work for? There is a pretty good test on you tube and the guy tests some of cheapest to the most expensive one's made. Go to you tube and type in muzzle brake test and watch it.

Interesting results considering the performance of some of the higher priced ones. The blog's #2 top rated looks like a copy of a Harrel's at four times the price.

If you have not done you 30 cal test yet I would like to know how the Harrell's tactical and radial brakes fit in.

Good work
Thanks

Kinda disappointed that Harrells wasn`t represented, just to find out where they stand amongst the others.......

The rest of the info was very interesting though..........

I don't work for anyone. 100% independent. I do this all in my spare time for free, just because I want to learn and help fellow shooters.

And yeah, I know the YouTube guys. I assume you're talking about the 2 guys from New Zealand (Greg & Dean). I talked to both as I was planning this test. Very friendly and knowledgeable. I also got input from the guys at Applied Ballistics (scary smart guys, and really helpful), and a few other engineers, defense contractors, and PhD's. David Tubb also helped me come up with the test to see how well each brake helps you stay on target. Honestly, I did the leg work ... but I can't take credit for all of it. A lot of smart guys gave me input, and brought this thing to a whole different level.

Sorry, man. This one is in the books ... I'm just publishing the results at this point. I've had a few people contact me asking why their favorite wasn't included, and it wasn't because it isn't a good one. I just do all this for free in my spare time, and can't test every brake out there. I included all of the muzzle brakes used by more than 2 shooters among the top 50 competitors in the Precision Rifle Series, and then I included a few more to try to represent the wide range of designs that are out there. The Harrell's might be fantastic ... I just couldn't test them all.

No criticism here. Thank you for your time and effort.

No criticism here either, I hope it didn`t come across as such.

I, as well as other people, just wanted to see how their (personally owned) brakes stacked up against the others.....

I do appreciate your time and effort to, not only set up and perform these tests, but then to spend the time to post them for others to see....

Great work! Looking forward to the 30 cal test.
As a competition shooter- Long, MidRange and XTC- I hate muzzle brakes. With that in mind I would like to see sound pressure measured from a point equivalent to an adjacent shooter.

Hey, no problem. I need to have pretty thick skin to publish stuff like this, so I'm use to far stronger comments than that. Honestly, you'd be shocked by some of the criticism that comes from doing tests like this. Some of it is beyond ridiculous, and very cutting and even personal. So I wasn't offended in the least by your comments.

Thanks,
Cal

Thank you for the info and test results, waiting for the big series test,

Is there any thoughts of adding the 284 Win/7mm Mag case since you have 2-30 caliber cases,
that would just about cover the spectrum of calibers.

At the end of the completed tests, are you going to give a description of each brake, ie,
length, dia, gill slot openings width, length and angles of openings, dia of bore opening as shot/used etc.

It was surprizeing that some of the brake makers REFUSED info etc on their products,
that raises questions for me. :o

Outstanding work and test.

Tia,
Don

Interesting indeed! Thanks for your time and resources in doing this test.
I have seen different results than yours with varying exit hole diameter, in terms of measurable results, but your test is more elaborate and more extensive than mine.
It appears there is measurable benefit in recoil reduction from the radical port design/angle of some of the new brakes. I'm eager to see the noise test results.
Kudos!
