muzzle brake question

DCRYDER

I was wondering how much change in POI there was with a brake on and with it removed and with a thread protector installed.

dcryder: Tikka barreled 308, groups at 200 yd. shifted approx. 2", when going from the brake on to off. But that's going to vary between rifles, loads, caliber, type of brake, etc. I don't think there is any "fixed" distsnce that would apply to all.

thanks for the reply, thats not as bad as i thought but like you said it will vary between rifles.

wonder if someone could tinker with different weighted thread protectors and eliminate this problem?

I think it all depends on the brake and how well it is installed. it shouldn't be more then an inch or so. but if it isn't concentric it will probably make a big difference.

It will have more effect on a rifle with a light contour. Youe are hanging a weight on the end of your barrel. Relative to your line of sight, a light contour barrel will flex more than a heavier contour. The larger the brake, the greater the flex.

I make some very small light brakes for light weight rifles, they are only 1.25" long and can be turned down to .60" I think they only weigh 2-3 Oz when they are that small, depending on the caliber.

It probably has more to do with harmonics than flex under the weight of the brake. but you are right it will probably be a bigger change on a lighter weight barrel.

When I mounted a Large Profile JP brake on my sporter remmy700 in 270win, POI didn't change, but my grouping shrank across the board. 1" to around .75" same loads, it was threaded by tornado tech. the extra weight must of helped

I can't tell you how much different it makes. But I can tell you I never see one that was installed properly that ever hurt accuracy. For you that shoot muzzleloader that is the best thing I ever seen.
150 gr charge feels like a 22-250. My 10 year old Grand Daughter hunts with a 150 gr charge all the time. Good Shooting Larry

Speakin of muzzleloaders with muzzle brakes. Ive been putting my 4 port "Muscle" brakes on the smokeless muzzleloaders. 73 gr of IMR 4198 is pushing a parker productions 327 gr bullet over 2800 fps and Im spotting my hits. Man is it fun to see a whitetail get hit with 6000 lbs of energy ;D

Even the best muzzle brake may change the point of impact from that of a naked barrel.

Think about what a tuner does. The muzzle brake changes the harmonics of a barrel just by being there.

The same applies to a muzzle cap.
