Guys – I see that Murphy Precision is now a sponsor on this site, and I wanted to share my experience with them. With the end of the F-T/R 600 yard matches for the season, I had decided to plan for the next year and attempt to try some 1000 yard matches. But I realize that with my current setup: a NF 8-32 NXS that sits atop my Ed Brown A-5 with 0 moa base, I did not have enough vertical adjustment for my .308 to reach out to 1000 yards.
After contacting Ed Brown, I was informed they manufacture their own rifle bases and had no demand for any base over a 0 moa, and therefore did not produce a 20 moa base. The Ed Brown M704 action is a constant diameter from front to back, whereas the Remington action has a flat bridge area where the rear base makes contact with the action.
Therefore, my search for a custom rifle base began. I contacted Cameron at Murphy Precision and explain my problem. Murphy Precision had never produced a base for an Ed Brown action but was willing to help me out. So I ordered a 20 moa 304 stainless steel base with Gunkote finish and mailed them my existing 2-piece base. Three days after the Post Office picked up my package, I received an email from Cameron confirming delivery to their shop. Another 2 days passed and I received another email from Cameron, he had just completed the base and put it back in the mail to me. Total turnaround time was 7 days.
The base came as specified with (4) 8-40 screws and T15 Torx wrench. The fit and finish was out-standing and fit like a glove. With my digital calipers, total length of the rail is 5.460” long and width is .840”. Measuring the front and back elevation, the slope of the base projects out exactly 20.0 moa. I found no machine swirl marks and the curve of the base match up very nicely with the action. The base laid so nice on the action I see no need to bed it. The spacing for the holes was perfect and matched the M704 action. Attached are several pictures that were taken from my cell phone hopefully showing the craftsmanship that was delivered with the new base. Check out the lettering on the base. Cost for my stainless steel base was quoted to me just as if it was a standard Remington 700 Short Action. But for all the extra setup and labor spent for this one off project, I feel like I got a huge bargain.
