I live in Canada and have often dealt with the RCMP. They are a police agency no better or worst than any other agency in North America . There are good ones and bad ones.

New Jersey might as well be called the Gestapo state. A teacher friend of mine's buddy was charged with illegal possession of a handgun, an antique flintlock, because it wasn't registered. A close friend of mine was stopped on I95 coming from Florida. He had a concealed carry permit but left his pistol in Florida. The state police practically stripped his car looking for it before letting him go. Even taking a more southerly route, I70 and then hooking back north, NY and/or NJ are unavoidable.

Taking the westerly route to New England you are only in the ny crap hole for about 50 miles then the Ct cesspool for another 100 or so before you get to Vermont.
