Most inherently accurate bullet weight for 6BR

I like to start from both ends and works toward the middle. Pick the cartridge and bullet and then a barrel, twist, powder, and primer that works best with that cartride and bullet combination.

For 100 to 300 yards, is there a weight class of bullet which produces the best accuracy in a 6BR?

But really, you could make the argument for a premium 80, and the 90 BT is no slouch.

13.5, 68 Avenger. I’ve been shooting a 13.5 for many years now, and I’m having a 10 twist built for no other reason than to take some stress off of that gun, kinda put my eggs in different baskets. The 10 twist is for 80s and 90s, mostly hunting and egg/balloon shoot type stuff.

But unless you’re at the highest level of competition, you can use a 12 and enjoy 80s as well.

A friend has been threatening to sell me a BAT 3L, 6PPC which I may do.

I am also thinking about a 6BR. I am more attracted to 600 yards than 1 - 300. I'm thinking a 6BR initially and it would be a simple barrel change to shoot farther. Well, for the rifle to be capable of shooting farther.

Wait! A 3L can handle a BR case. Hmmm. Would might need to have the bolt modified.

For serious short range BR shooting with a 6PPC 68 gr bullets were used by most shooters. For shorter distances you don't need a great BC. Speed helps with drop and wind drift. I shoot 60 gr Sierra's at about 3585 in my 14 twist 6BR. An extremly accurate factory bullet.

I can’t wait to play with the 6br. I just sent the parts for my build to Old Dominion yesterday . A Borden action and 3 barrels a Krieger 8 twist for the heavies a 13.5 twist Bartlein for the 68s . Also a 13.75 twist Krieger to chamber in 6ppc . Should keep me busy for awhile. From what I’ve read and what was recommended by some top notch Benchrest shooters 68g bullets out to 300 yards.
103-108g beyond that . Obviously the 6PPC dominates at 100 yards but we aren’t talking about that. When I look up Benchrest results they seam to reinforce these recommendations.
Here’s a pic of recent 100 yard Benchrest results as well as 200 yard results. The 65-68g are definitely what’s winning.

What works well in one person's rifle, may not work in yours.

You can get a guess as to bullet weight range for barrel twist.
But which exact bullet, only the target can tell you.

I've wanted a rifle in 6BR for years and finally got around to having one built on a 40X action. I shoot almost exclusively at 400yds but will hunt groundhogs wherever they are. I decided on an 8 twist and shoot mostly 105gr bullets. However, I have been fooling around with light varmint bullets just to see how they'd fair in my 8twist, ,150 FB barrel. I can get the 55 Ballistic Tip bullets to 3,500+ fps without any issues but the accuracy at 400yds just wasn't there. I tried the Berger 65 BT bullet and was amazed at just how accurate they were with a .150" jump to the rifling. I fired several 3-shot groups that came in at around 1/2" at the 400yd line. Benchmark was the powder of choice. I've got some 87gr V-Max bullets now that can be loaded close to the rifling and I'm just starting to develop a load for them. So far, they look like they've got good potential.

In my very limited experience, I think an 8 twist (6BR) is a good choice which leaves you many options as far as bullet selection goes.

Not really when you look at the entire picture. Free bore length, diameter and throat angle are juggled with twist rates, jacket lengths and bore/groove dimensions for serious short range 'tuneability'.

The tuneablility of a combo in the prevailing conditions at the time is of paramount consideration. Much more so that the 'ultimate' accuracy (smallest groups).

For the casual or semi serious, my recommendation for what you outline is always a 6BR with a .237/.243 barrel twisted 1:13 or 1:12 with the throat length appropriate for the .825 long jacketed 68 gr-ish bullets. If the free bore length is right, you can still use the .790 length jacket length bullets.

I see way more 6BR and 30BR at the local matches than the PPC.

I've been shooting 223Rem.

If I can ever get this build done I'll be shooting 250 Savage.

Hey Ken, I'll be 76 in a couple weeks, don't take to long. The reason you don't see a lot of PPCs local is because most guys have 1 rifle and shoot out to 500 yds with it, plus you must make the cases. But since you haven't been active the last couple years you have missed that a lot of our better local shooters have put together a ppc lately . It's hard not to like than inherent super accuracy. I want to whip on that .250 before my time is up.

I had a 10 t Hart barrel installed on my 6br bench gun had a struggle finding a bullet that would perform at 200 yds only. but with Burger 90 grn target bullets, 31.5 gr of re 15 , at .015 cram it shoots. very happy Gary

Do you have the specs for the reamer...free bore length, neck dimension, etc? What twist is the barrel?

Since the OP specifically stated 6 BR at 100/200/300, I would not discount the Barts 80 grn BT out of a 1-12 twist.

The 1-12 will also shoot 68 grn bullets built on .825 jackets very well.

I do not have specs for a chamber, I leave that up to Bob Brackney. The barrel will be a Krieger, 13.5 twist. 6BR, no turn neck. Bob will throat it for the Berger 68's.

As of now I only have a place to shoot 100 and 200 yards. Once I go through the 1,000 Bergers I will have a plan for what to do next.
