Most explosive 6mm pill?

Whats everybody think is the most explosive 6mm pill?
Looking at setting up the 6mmbr as a varmint rifle....

Cheers

Depends on your rate of twist. I have two 6mm BR barrels. One is a 1 in 14" twist, the other is a 1 in 7.5" twist. The 1 in 14" twist shoots 65grn. Hornady V-Maxes as accurate as any match bullet; 5 shots in a < 3/8" group @200 meters with perfect conditions. I'm pushing that bullet at 3450 ft/s. with a healthy dose of Varget. It will eviscerate crows and kill groundhogs cleanly.

I'm still experimenting with the 1 in 7.5". It shoots heavy match bullets,105 grn.+) very well but I haven't used it on live game yet. I'm going to try 75, 80, 90, & 95 grn. varmint bullets to see what it will do. If the bullets will hold together, it should be awesome on varmints.

just started using 58 gr vmaxs in my old 14 twist match barrel with excelent results in my ppc. that gun consistantly shot low 1s with 65gr eubers. after 2000 round of match bullets down the tube im still shooting low 2s with the vmaxs. explosive!!!

75gr Vmax - 29.0gr H322 shoots extremely well out of both my 6mmBR's one a 14tw the other a 8tw. This load really provides great red mist effects with flying prairie dog parts out to 600yds. And you can't beat 87gr Vmax's out of a 6mmAI for long range work out past 600yds.

I have shot most 6mm bullets. I shoot 70gr Sierra Blitzkings. I use a 6BR 12 tw running them 3500 f/s with N135 - Fed 205 GM. They seem to kill better than anything I have shot. Best kill this year was 620 yds and many over 500yds on eastern Groundhogs.

I would say the 87grn V-Max. The 6BR, with a 28" barrel, will push the 87grn V-Max at 3100fps. The 75grn V-Max is awesome too, however, the 87grn V-Max has a higher BC and retains it's energy at longer ranges. Anyone of these bullets will do the job very well. I will say this, the 87grn V-Max will give you a better chance to hit varmints at longer ranges. If your only going to be shooting from 100 to 300 yards, the 75grn V-Max will be perfect. However, if your going to be shooting varmints from 100 to 600 yards, the 87grn V-Max should be your choice. The 105grn A-Max also does a pretty good job of vaporizing varmints too.

This is an interesting thread.

I have just setup a 6mm Dasher with 8T barrel. It shoots the 107's beautifully & I too was wondering about what to use for varminting. The toss up was between the 75 & 85 VMAX's. Does anyone care to comment as to whether one is more likley to blowup in an 8T barrel,ie before it hits the target!)

Sierra Blitz bullets have been far and away the most "explosive" bullets I have ever used on small game. They expand so violently that you can hear the impact as if they were in fact explosive. Actually pretty neat!

BigDaddie, The 6BR and 6BR dasher will not push the bigger bullets fast enough to blow up in an 8 twist. You will be able to shoot 75grn and 87grn V-Max with no problem. My friend shoots 87grn V-Max out of his 6BR at a velocity of 3120fps out of 28" 1-8 twist Lilja Barrel and it is devastating on squirrels out to 600 yards.

BigDaddie, what are the specs on your rifle?I am currently having a 6BR built as we speak. I can't wait to get it, so I can shoot squirrels in the Spring. In the past, I used a 6x284 and 6MM AI for my squirrel eradication. However, on one of my hunts a friend of mine brought his brand new custom 6BR. I could not believe how accurate and deadly this little cartridge is. He was shooting 87grn V-Max and 105grn A-Max bullets. Both of those bullets performed extremely well. The 105grn A-Max was deadly accurate at 600 yards. The 87grn V-Max performed very well at that range too. I was really surprised with the red mist factor of the 105grn A-Max at the shorter ranges. For the ultimate red mist, the 87grn V-Max is the way to go. My friend is currently shooting the 87grn V-Max at 3120fps using Varget and CCI 450 primers, and he is getting 2905fps with the 105grn A-Max using the same type of powder and Primer. His barrel is a 1-8 twist, 28" Lilja.I thought I would out shoot him at the longer ranges from 400 to 600 yards. I was wrong, he easily out shot me. Once I shot his rifle, I was hooked and the following week I began ordering parts for my custom 6BR build. This is what I went with;
1. Match 6BR Chamber for Lapua Brass with a .272 no turn neck.
2.Action-Stiller Predator Short Action, Single Shot.
3.Barrel-Bartlein, 28", 1-8 twist, 1.250 all the way to muzzle with flutes.
4. Stock-Manners T4A-Color is Flat Black,Awesome stock!)
5. Jewel 2oz trigger
6. Vais Muzzle brake
7. Stiller 20 MOA rail
8. Badger Bolt Knob
9. Nightforce 30mm Rings
10. Nightforce NXS 8x32x56 with MLR Reticle
11. All metal coated with flat black Durocoat

The guys at Stiller were great to deal with and Tom Manners of Manners Stocks was awesome to deal with too. I received my Predator Action in 8 weeks, and I received my Manners T4A stock in 11 weeks. I am so glad I found Manners stocks, I really got sick of waiting 6 months for a McMillan Stock. I highly recommend Stiller Actions and Manners Stocks for your next build.

Gday 6BR,

my rifle is built on a RUGER VT action. I originally built it for varminting plus a little F-Class shooting....but havent shot it for some time due to other commitments. I must say that some people laughed at me when I said that I was building it on this action,I had it sitting there in the safe for a while) but all I can say is that it straight out shoots well. Performance downrange is what really matters. Specs as follows:

The action was bluprinted and the boltface bushed.
Chamber is no turn .272" neck,I skim clean the necks up only..loaded O/D is .270")
Fitted custom 20moa rail
8T SS Maddcco barrel,Aust manufactured) 28"
Spec-tech trigger,worked++ to 200gms)
Leupold rings and Leupold LRT 8.5-25 scope with Varmint reticle.

The stock is a modified anschutz style stock....laminated. Essentially I did a heap of milling to provide a recessed forend and fitted an anschutz accessory rail. This allows me to use a 3" wide flat plate with the rail as well as a harris bipod, using the anschutz adapter). The action is pillar bedded with stainless pillars.

It still operates as magazine fed however I tend to use the benchrest follower for single loding most of the time. This doesnt affect feeding, function of the extractor or damage the brass in any way.,i thought it might).

Load wise, I use lapua brass with the 107 SMK. Powder is AR2208,Varget) 32.7gns with CCI primer. Neck tension is .001" however I have another bushing on the way to trial .002". This load shoots just under an inch of elevation at 300m. As I mentioned before, I havent really shot this rifle much and did very limited testing. That is why I was asking about bullet performance as I'm looking to do some load development now using the vmax and Amax projectiles. The other thing I'm interested in is whether the Rem primers are better than the CCI's.

BigDaddie, sounds like an awesome rifle. I have heard Ruger VT Actions perform quiet well once they have been tuned. Anyhow, good luck with the testing. I haven't heard anything about the Rem Primers, however, I have been hearing the Russian Wolf primers work very well.

I would think the 6mm 62 grain Barnes Varmint Grenade would be very competitive for the title of most explosive. However, they require a fast twist, 1:10 or quicker, due to being longer for the weight. These bullets have a powdered copper-tin metal core, which has the consistency of a stick of welder's soapstone, inside a gliding metal jacket. They are similar in length to 85-90 grain lead core bullets. They wouldn't shoot in my 6 PPC due to the 1:14 twist. Now waiting on a new Shilen barrel to solve that problem. So far the .204 and .224 Varmint Grenades shoot very well.

Regarding the Varmint Grenade Bullets, from what I have seen, they're ok for shooting out to around 300 yards but after that, they aren't worth a crap. The Varmint Grenades have a real low BC in both the .22 cal and 6mm Cal bullets.

IMHO and through experience, the V-Max bullets are the best varmint bullets out there and for 6mm the 75grn V-Max,BC .330) and the 87grn V-Max,BC .400) are the best for shooting out to 600 yards when you need accuracy, killing power and wind bucking capabilities.

The most explosive bullet I have used in 6mm is the 60 grain HP Varminter from Sierra. It shoots very well out to about 300 hundred yards, so if you are looking to reach farther on a cosistent basis, I would suggest the 75 grain V-max from Hornady. The 60 grain however is like a bomb going off when it makes contact, I have had cases where my friend shot a Jackrabbit with his 243 Winchester and it flew about 10 ft in the air and cleared some of the taller grass in the area and painted the earth. I have never seen another bullet wreak so much havoc on varmints.

In my 243 Win I shoot the 55 grn Sierra Blitzking with a stiff dose of H-414. The little bullet is stupid accurate out to 500 yards. On eastern woodchucks you will see red mist and some wild acrobatics. At 100 yards the rifle will shoot under 2's quite often.
